In this presentation we will delve into how the Backcountry was established, its significance within the region, and the factors that shaped its identity. Over the past 15 years, HRCA ownership has driven key changes and improvements, fostering a multitude of recreational and educational opportunities while conserving and improving its habitat and value to wildlife. We’ll discuss the future, what challenges we might face and opportunities that exist.

Presenter: Mark Giebel, HRCA Backcountry Manager

Mark Giebel was born and raised in northern Douglas County, Colorado. He attended Highlands Ranch High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology/Ecology from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. After graduation, he eagerly returned to Colorado to begin his career.
Mark’s journey with the Highlands Ranch Community Association started during high school as a lifeguard. In 1999, he became a full-time employee and, in 2006, was named the first employee and Director of the Backcountry Wilderness Area. Having witnessed the growth and transformation of northern Douglas County since 1975, Mark is deeply committed to preserving its natural spaces and fostering a love for the outdoors among future generations.
Mark lives and works in Highlands Ranch with his wife, Kristi. He is a proud stepfather to two adult children and the devoted owner of two wonderful doodles. In his free time, Mark enjoys exploring the outdoors with his wife, usually on a bike!
