SUMMARY:April: Celebrating Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 20\, 2026\n\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables.\nProgram  7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\nConsider applying the Donation to Membership!    Click HERE for more info.\n\n \n  \nMay is Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Be prepared to celebrate this special month in the Denver area by understanding the culture and significance of various events and activities. \nTonight’s program will be primarily focusing on Japanese culture and the Denver experience.  Although Japanese food and pop culture have gone “mainstream\,” the history of Japanese Americans in Colorado is often overlooked. Gil Asakawa will present a talk that gives that history\, including the incarceration of almost 10\,000 people of Japanese heritage at Amache\, one of ten incarceration sites established during WWII. The camp in southeastern Colorado near Granada is now designated as a National Historic Site. Gil will also talk about the Japantown area along Larimer Street that is now concentrated at Sakura Square\, the hub of the local Japanese community. \nABOUT OUR SPEAKER: GIL ASAKAWA \nGil Asakawa is a cultural consultant\, journalist\, author and blogger whose topics include Japan\, Japanese Americans and Asian Americans. He is a nationally-known speaker\, panelist and expert on Japanese American and Asian American history and identity. He has authored several books of which the latest is “Tabemasho! Let’s Eat!”\, a history of Japanese food in America. He will have this book available for purchase. \nABOUT OUR PERFORMER:  TONI YAGAMI \nEnjoy the special presentation of Taiko drumming with a short performance courtesy of Taiko With Toni–“Thrill to the Thunderous Sounds of the Taiko”.   Toni Yagami is performing\, in traditional costume\, using taiko drums\, and throughout the group’s musical presentations\, the audience will be delighted.  Before taiko\, Toni Yagami received a BA in music education and taught instrumental music in the public school system\, played oboe in a community orchestra\, and assisted with the Denver Jr. Police Band.  In 1979\, she joined Denver Taiko and never looked back. She became a member of the professional taiko company\, San Jose Taiko\, in 1988\, then returned to Denver in 1995 (married Lance Acker) and started her own taiko group. Currently\, Toni\, Lance and members from their current rehearsal group and classes\, combine the joyous sounds of Japanese taiko\, hand percussion\, bamboo flutes\, and a “swinging” jazz clarinet\, as they play traditional folk and contemporary tunes.\nJapanese culture and history are intermingled with various other cultures throughout our musical presentation. We hope you will find something that you can relate to\, and that it brings a smile to your face\, your heart\, and your soul! \nTaiko with Toni – Thrill to the Thunderous Sounds of the Taiko \n \nCherry blossoms\, or sakura\, are celebrated in Japan and worldwide as a symbol of spring\, beauty\, and the fleeting nature of life.   They are the white and pink blossoms of the Cherry Tree. \n \nPROGRAM SPONSORS Providing gifts for guests’ door prizes. –Thank you!   \nStacey Shigaya\, Executive Director of the Sakura Foundation.  The mission of Sakura Foundation is to celebrate and share Japanese and Japanese American culture and heritage in order to promote a more compassionate\, resilient and equitable society.  Home – Sakura Foundation \n Janice Ogawa\, Secretary\, Board of Officers\, Japanese American Resource Center of Colorado (JARCC).    The Japanese American Resource Center of Colorado’s mission is to be a vibrant resource\, preserving\, educating\, and communicating the evolving Japanese-American experience in Colorado. SUMMARY:July Program: The Roswell Body After Roswell
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, July 20\, 2026\n\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner table.\nProgram  7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\nConsider applying the Donation to Membership!    Click HERE for more info.\n \nA Denver Mortuary\, Masonic\, Military\, and Judicial Cover-up.    The Roswell incident of July 1947 remains one of the most scrutinized and contested events in the history of unidentified flying objects. Over the past seven decades\, researchers have examined crash recovery operations\, debris transport\, military press statements\, and intelligence assessments in an effort to determine what occurred near Roswell\, New Mexico. This body of work has focused primarily on the initial phase of recovery and analysis. Far less attention has been paid to what followed\, specifically\, how custody of an alleged biological entity may have been managed once immediate recovery and intelligence priorities passed. \nKaties’ research reframes Roswell not as a single historical event\, but as an extended custodial process that continued quietly for decades beyond the desert of New Mexico.  If one Roswell body did not follow the official path\, this presentation asks the unavoidable question.  Where did it go\, and who had the authority to keep it there? \nFollow the dots\, the interview trails\, and the connections. Katie will take us on an investigative journey. \n\njudicial authority\n• burial and mortuary oversight\n• medical–legal coordination\nmilitary–civilian interface\ncontinuity of discretion across decades\n\nThis case does not rely on belief\, secrecy narratives\, or anonymous claims. It rests on: \n\nA body held under judicial authority at a Denver mortuary\nIndependent military testimony referencing Denver as a mortuary destination\nMedical infrastructure capable of viscera retention\nVerified civic trust networks with burial authority\nJudicial authority with documented military proximity\nAfter-hours\, restricted reinterment procedures\nDirect witness confirmation of judicial presence\n\nABOUT OUR PRESENTER- KATIE PAIGE \n\n \nKatie Paige is a leading voice in the study of high strangeness\, known for her extensive research into UFOs\, paranormal phenomena\, cryptids\, and anomalous events. As the director of Rocky Mountain Ranch Research in Colorado\, she carries forward decades of field investigations at Rocky Mountain Ranch—formally known as Clearview Ranch in the historic APRO case files. This unique property is recognized as one of the most active and well-documented ranches in the United States\, with evidence and testimony featured in books\, documentaries\, and popular series\, including Beyond Skinwalker Ranch. \nKatie has made appearances on several television shows\, including History Channel’s Beyond Skinwalker\, The UnXplained with William Shatner\, Travel Channel’s UFO Witness\, Gaia’s Beyond Belief with George Noory\, Small Town Monsters: On the Trail of UFOs – Night Visitors\, and UFOs Revisited\, as well as in Ron James’s films Accidental Truth. \nShe conducts independent investigations and research through her Rocky Mountain Ranch Research Foundation and has presented at numerous conferences. Additionally\, she has been featured on many radio shows and podcasts\, including Coast to Coast with George Knapp and Chinwag with Paul Giamatti. \nKatie is the host of “The Trifecta” – where UFOs\, Paranormal\, and Cryptids Collide\, Rocky Mountain Ranch Research’s official Podcast\, which broadcasts live every Wednesday night\, and she also co-hosts the UAP Studies Podcast alongside Jason Guillemette\, bringing leading voices in the field into public conversation. \nShe is the author of Letters of Love & Light: Four Decades of UFO Encounters\, Experiences & Sightings Shared with Ufologist R. Leo Sprinkle\, Ph.D.\, and co-author of Snippy the Horse: UFOs\, Mutilations\, and the Cover-Up That Started It All”. She is currently writing her third book\, The Rocky Mountain Ranch: Crafts\, Cattle\, Cryptids\, and Cover-Ups. \nBeyond her research and writing\, Katie is the co-founder of Taranis Air (https://www.taranisair.com/)\, a woman-owned drone services company\, and Merged Moments (https://www.mergedmoments.com/)\, a video legacy service\, and she holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Communication. \nThrough her writing\, media appearances\, and investigative work\, Katie continues to build a bridge between experiencers\, researchers\, and the public\, inviting audiences into a conversation about mysteries that challenge our understanding of reality.  She will be presenting this program at the UFO Convention: Contact in the Desert in CA. \nKatie will have books available for sale. SUMMARY:September Program: Rufus "Potato" Clark and the Clark Colony
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 21\, 2026\n\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner table.\nProgram  7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\nConsider applying the Donation to Membership!    Click HERE for more info.\nRegistration Coming Soon \n \nCherry Creek: Castlewood Canyon\, Canals\, and Clark Colony Cherries \nLee Whiteley will enlighten and entertain us with the story of colorful “Potato” Clark. A potato farmer\, real estate developer\, and beloved philanthropist with a connection to the main campus of Denver University.  \nThe 1890 Castlewood Canyon Dam south of Franktown helped protect Denver from Cherry Creek flooding\, but the primary motive for the dam was irrigation. The dam\, a canal\, a water storage system\, and 15\,000 acres of Rufus “Potato” Clark’s Clark Colony in northern Douglas and Arapahoe counties provided the opportunity for new farming operations. \n \nA series of developers and land promoters enticed settlers to develop 5-to-10-acre parcels of irrigated land for fruit orchards\, primarily cherries. The secretary and treasurer of one of the development companies was John W. Springer\, the owner of the Highlands Ranch Mansion property from 1897 – 1913. \nOne of his proposed new uses of Clark Colony land was the growing of sugar beets. But bankruptcies\, problems with the dam\, and lawsuits over land ownership and water rights slowed the developments. However\, it was the failure of the Castlewood Dam in August 1933 that immediately ended the flow of water to the orchards. \nLee will have an assortment of his books plus his latest book: Cherry Creek – A History of the Valley.  Check or cash only. \n \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER:  LEE WHITELEY \n \nLee Whiteley is a fourth generation Coloradan now living in Centennial. After taking an early retirement as a computer programmer-analyst\, he began his study of the Cherokee Trail which passed through his great grandparents homestead east of Castle Rock. Lee and wife Jane are the authors of nine books and one PBS documentary\, all dealing with early transportation systems in Colorado and the West. \nLee has presented several programs for the Highland Ranch Historical Society.
