SUMMARY:May Program--The History of The NFL Since the Broncos Stampeded Onto the Field\, Plus Much More
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 19\, 2025\n\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm   Program 7:00-8:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nCruisePlanners will be our guest business sponsor\, providing expert travel information.\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\nConsider applying the Donation to Membership!    Click HERE for more info.\n \nHow Do the Denver Broncos Rank in Winning Percentages in the 50+ seasons since the AFL/NFL Era started? \nScott Perry says it’s not a football town; it’s a football Time Zone!! The number of fans the Denver Broncos represents is astronomical for the cow town where this American Football League first appeared. As the AFL was winding down its 10-year history\, many wanted to put this never-a-winner team out to pasture. Tales of that early team made for a dark start but once Denver gained top-level NFL status\, it was onward and upward (with a few setbacks). \nThat 1970 AFL/NFL combined football league boosted the start of the National Football League in its 50th season.  Since then\, the NFL has been in a stratosphere all its own in our sports hungry nation. \n\nCome take in the history of the Broncos and if you love another team … well lucky for you\, the presentation takes your team into account as a part of Denver sports history. Hopefully\, the Broncos won the biggest game played between the two\, but even if it is not the case\, Scott opens up a firehose that has been informing fans young and old for over 10 seasons. \nYou will hear how all teams rank in greatness or lousiness in regular seasons. (Of course\, we’ll talk Super Bowl wins\, also.) \nThe stories are fun\, and Scott doles out hope for all fans in his effort to track the Broncos to the same level of eliteness as his Dad’s NY Yankees. (Scott became a Mets fan at age ten living in Levittown NY – a year or so prior to becoming a Bronco fan.) \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: \nScott Perry was Blessed with the ability to learn and remember pro football history as a kid who had to endure 10 schools from K-12th. With zero interest in the sport until being introduced to “Inside the NFL” on HBO\, Scott found a love of the game because of the slow-motion videos capturing players scoring to heart-pounding orchestral music in each game’s highlight reel. \nHe lives in Littleton with his Missouri raised wife and a daughter he hopes catches the same fever for the best spectator sport around.  Scott is a former 7NEWS fan Of the Week and cherishes his voicemail informing him the man he considers the biggest part of Bronco success\, Pat Bowlen\, was a huge fan of his effort showing how great the Broncos have been since 1970. \nDo you know there is a Colorado Sports Hall-of- Fame Museum at the Broncos’ Stadium (Empower Field)? Scott will be mentioning it and will have a few pictures and stories to share. \nScott will be signing his book. Cash or check only. \n

SUMMARY:February Program: Thomas Jefferson--Third President of the United States
DESCRIPTION:Photo:  Official Presidential portrait of Thomas Jefferson (by Rembrandt Peale\, 1800) \n  \nMonday\, February 17\, 2025\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram  7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n  \n \nThe extraordinary life of this very complex man.  Surely Thomas Jefferson was the most able and the most complex of America’s first presidents. One might look simply at the volume of paperwork he produced over his 83 years\, his architectural drawings\, the number of original inventions he incorporated into the building of his beloved Monticello\, the careful botanical observations and experiments he conducted and the massive plans he prepared for the University of Virginia to prove that he was an extraordinary scientist and engineer. \n \nMonticello by Thomas Jefferson \nOne must add to the picture his long experience as a politician and public servant: representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses\, delegate to the Continental Congress\, Governor of Virginia\, American Minister to France\, U.S. Secretary of State\, Vice President and then President of the United States. \nIn the complex creation of a new nation\, it was often Jefferson’s ideas and philosophy that helped shape the states. \nThis program will present an overview of the biography of Thomas Jefferson\, looking most closely at his role in shaping the United States and delving into his family life at Monticello that sustained him through his long public service career. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER:   \nMary Sudman Donovan \nMary Sudman Donovan is a historian and author. She earned a Ph.D. in American history at Columbia University and has taught American and World History. Having taught for many years at Hunter College of the City University of New York\, she now teaches Learners’ Courses at Wind Crest in Highlands Ranch. Mary’s interest in Thomas Jefferson was sparked by the fact that her husband\, Herbert Donovan\, grew up in Charlottesville\, Virginia and attended the University of Virginia. She could see how pervasive Thomas Jefferson’s influence was on the culture and mind set of that small city and how it shaped the education that was offered at “Mr. Jefferson’s University.” \nPROGRAM SPONSOR:  Rick Martin\, CPA\, Charter Financial. \nRick Martin\, CPA\, Charter Financial will have a partner table and provide some insight into the upcoming INCOME TAX RETURNS.  California wildfire victims qualify for automatic tax extension until October 15th.  What does that mean for them?   And what can YOU learn from that now.   Rick can be reached at http://www.cfrusa.com/\n

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, November 18\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram  7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nJohn Wesley Anderson’s book tells the inside story of the murder of six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey. JonBenet was murdered in her family’s home in Boulder\, Colorado\, on Christmas night 1996. This presentation will share 20 of Detective Lou Smit’s original investigative slides which shows compelling evidence of an intruder. \nThis PowerPoint presentation includes evidence foreign to the crime scene. Also\, conclusive DNA evidence left on the body which excluded all members of the Ramsey family from being involved in the attempted kidnapping and murder. \nABOUT OUR SPEAKER:  JOHN WESLEY ANDERSON\nJohn Wesley Anderson\, MBA\, is an author\, TEDx speaker\, and recipient of the 2022 Golden Quill Award presented by the Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District. He retired after 30-year law enforcement career; including 22 years with the Colorado Springs Police Department and 8 years as the Sheriff for El Paso County\, Colorado. After being term-limited as Sheriff John worked homeland and corporate security for 10 years for Lockheed Martin. He retired in 2012 to pursue his passions for history\, writing\, and the arts. \nAlthough John has traveled around the world\, including several adventures on a catamaran sailing the Caribbean\, three corporate security assignments into a combat zone on the Horn of Africa\, and landing on an aircraft carrier at sea in the Pacific Ocean\, he remains most fascinated by the rich history and art discovered in his own backyard in the American Southwest. \nThe book Lou and JonBenet will be available for purchase (as well as some of his other books).   Checks and cash only. \nOr it can be purchased in advance in hardcover\, softcover\, eBook\, or audiobook online at www.Amazon.com. John will be signing his books.

SUMMARY:Program: A Fun Evening with Erma Bombeck
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 21\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram  7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n\nThree days a week in over 900 papers across the country\, Erma Bombeck’s column At Wit’s End captured the ups and downs of a new American phenomenon\, the suburban housewife.\nFiguring you had to be able to laugh at life to get through it\, Ms. Bomback brought to American awareness the struggles of women whose lives otherwise felt invisible and taken for granted. She let women across America know:\n“You are not alone. We number in the millions. I\, too\, am an American housewife\, and I will laugh by your side.”\n \nWe will find out how Erma got started as a humorist.  You will surely chuckle along as she pokes fun at kids\, husbands\, household appliances\, and especially herself.\nThis program includes a monologue in-character\, a Q&A “with Erma” and a Q&A with the scholar/presenter\, Susan Marie Frontczak.\nABOUT OUR PRESENTER:  SUSAN MARIE FRONTCZAK\nSusan Marie Frontczak has given over 875 Living History presentations as Marie Curie\, Mary Shelley\, Irene Castle\, Clara Barton\, Eleanor Roosevelt\, and Erma Bombeck across 43 of the United States. She also works with both students and adults to develop their own Living History presentations and is the author of the Young Chautauqua handbooks for Colorado Humanities.\n \nSusan Marie joins millions of Erma Bombeck fans in the U.S. and around the world in celebrating one of the 20th century’s most prolific writers and humorists. As a teen\, she competed with her mother to see which of them could snag the monthly Good Housekeeping magazine in order to be the first to read Erma Bombeck’s column.\nSusan Marie says the hardest part of presenting as Erma Bombeck is choosing what to include from a seemingly endless supply of priceless material. It is a puzzle she is glad to take on as none of her other characters have given her so much to laugh at along the way.

SUMMARY:Program: Rick Crandall and the Colorado Freedom Memorial --25 Years in the Making and More to Come
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 16\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram  7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nOn May 30\, 2000\, Rick Crandall broadcast his morning radio show from the American Cemetery above Omaha Beach in Normandy\, France. After the four-hour program the equipment was packed up and the thank-yous were shared and then Rick took one last walk through the cemetery not realizing he would be carrying something home with him and it was something he couldn’t shake. \nFor the last 25 years the Colorado Freedom Memorial and Rick Crandall have been synonymous. What started as an idea after a radio broadcast from France has become one of the most unique military memorials in the country\, and it’s about to get bigger!    \n \nThis is the first memorial in America dedicated to ALL wars\, ALL branches of service and containing the names of all those who died from a single state in those wars.\n \nThe Colorado Freedom Memorial is located in Aurora\, Colorado near Buckley Air Force Base. Constructed of glass panels that reflect Colorado’s mountains and blue skies the Memorial holds the names of over 6\,000 Coloradans killed or missing in action. They are grouped by war\, but names will not be alphabetically listed. Much of the Colorado Freedom Memorial is meant to reflect the chaos of war\, including the shuffling of names. \n \nPRESENTER: RICK CRANDALL \n \nFor 30 years Rick was the host of the Breakfast Club on AM 1430\, KEZW and during that time built a close relationship with the veteran community. In 2012 Rick was named the Colorado Broadcaster of the Year for his work on the air and with numerous nonprofit organizations. It is\, though\, the Colorado Freedom Memorial that is closest to his heart.   \n  PARTNER TABLES AND EVENTS\n \nChristopher M. Falkel  American Legion Post 1260 Will be on hand to Present and Retire the Colors.  Post Commander Joe Langran will  give a brief update on the name change of the Highlands Ranch Post to the Christopher M. Falkel American Legion Post 1260. \nThere will also be a table with information about the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument.

Each landscape hosted incredibly different and now-extinct plants and animals\, leaving behind a rich fossil record\, including those in Highlands Ranch. \nA short video will show how the plates have changed over the last 4 billion years. \nSee how Geoscience helps us as a society. \nA colleague from the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists will have a display table with rocks and fossils and will be available to answer questions. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER:  DR. DONNA ANDERSON \n \nDr. Donna Anderson\, Affiliate Faculty in Geology\, Colorado School of Mines is a semi-retired geologist\, working since 1974 in geotechnical engineering in California and later in the oil and gas industry in the western U.S. and internationally. She received a B.A. in Earth Science and Geography at Cal State Fullerton (1974)\, a M.S. in Geology at UCLA (1980)\, and a Ph.D. in Geology (sedimentology/stratigraphy) at Mines (1997). Her post-Ph.D. career interwove industry and academia as a consultant and geological advisor in the oil and gas industry\, retiring in 2015. \nSince 2000\, she has been on the faculty in the Mines Dept. of Geology and Geological Engineering as a research professor and Affiliate Faculty. She has taught undergraduate and graduate students in the field\, core lab\, and classroom and has been on dozens of Mines thesis committees across departments. \nThroughout her career Donna has participated in geologic societies\, foundations\, and local community groups\, and is a Past President of the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists and is currently on the Board of the Dinosaur Ridge Foundation. Having moved toward community outreach\, she enjoys peeling back the layers of the geologic landscape for the non-geologist. \nDr. Donna Anderson and co-author Paul Haseman recently published Golden Rocks: The Geology and Mining History of Golden\, Colorado\, a free eBook in the Arthur Lakes digital repository. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Program: Rocky Mountain Ranch UFO Sightings\, Government Cover-Ups
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, July 15\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram  7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nJoin Katie Paige\, researcher investigator author\, as she shares her latest discoveries concerning the Rocky Mountain Ranch and surrounding areas. She will be discussing the possibility of deep CIA coverups\, MKUltra’s LSD mind control programs\, sonic and ultrasonic frequency non-lethal military warfare\, as well as “talking” laser plasma balls and much more.\nAre the phenomena experienced and their UFO/paranormal related\, or is it all a ruse intended to distract from the nefarious activities conducted there\, or both?\nThe Rocky Mountain  Ranch was investigated by the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization and others in the 1970’s but the activity continues to this day! It is the location of the biggest remote viewing project ever conducted\, (even by the CIA and DIA).  Many strange activities experienced on the ranch will be shared in this PowerPoint presentation.\nNewspaper headlines dubbed the ranch the “Close Encounter Capital of the US”.  Rocky Mountain Ranch has been written about in several books. It has been featured on the History Channels: Beyond Skinwalker\, Beyond Belief\, UFO Witness\, Small Town Monsters\, and other programs.\nABOUT OUR PRESENTER:  KATIE PAIGE\n \nKatie Paige has personal ties to High Strangeness Ranch in Colorado\, now known as the “Rocky Mountain Ranch”. In UFO folklore it was known as the “Clearview” Ranch\, and pre-dates the infamous “Skinwalker Ranch” by over a decade. This is what motivated her interest in ufology\, to find answers to her experiences\, and to try and uncover the truth as to what was happening there.\nSee her on History Channel’s Beyond Skinwalker\, UFO Witness\, Gaia’s Beyond Belief\, Ancient Aliens\, Small Town Monsters\, On the Trail of UFO’s Night Visitors\, and the film Accidental Truth.\nKatie\, who has a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication\, conducts independent investigations and research through her Rocky Mountain Ranch Research foundation. She has been a presenter at several conferences\, has appeared on many radio shows and podcasts\, including Coast to Coast\, Spaced Out Radio\, UAP Studies Podcast\, and many more.\nKatie is the author of: Letters of Love & Light – Four Decades of UFO Encounters\, Experiences & Sightings Shared with Ufologist R. Leo Sprinkle Ph.D.  \nYou will have the opportunity to purchase her book before and after the program\, and she will sign it if you would like.  $15 Cash or check. \n  \nSee Katie’s website for more interesting information and testimonials.\nWeb Site: www.katiepaige.net

SUMMARY:Program: Becoming an Elvis Tribute Artist plus the Elvis Denver Connection
DESCRIPTION:.. \nMonday\, April 15\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram  7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nAaron Black will present a Tribute to Elvis in Concert show (yes\, Elvis will be performing!) and then will explain how he became an Elvis Tribute Artist (ETA). Will some lucky ladies in the front row get a scarf or a lei? The program concludes with a history of Elvis in Denver and Aaron will answer questions about ETA’s and Elvis trivia. Are you familiar with the Elvis sandwich? \n \nAaron Black has been performing his Award-Winning Tribute to Elvis for over 25 years. He has won two “Best-in-Show” awards at the Air Force Talent competitions and many other awards! Aaron has performed in two television commercials (one local\, one nation-wide) and in one radio commercial and was a finalist for a recent Apple nationwide commercial. \nThe 5 Elvis Suits that he currently wears are authentic $4000 recreations of Elvis’ most famous suits\, including the Aloha Eagle Jumpsuit worn in the Aloha From Hawaii TV Concert! These suits are created by some of the same people who created Elvis’ original suits and are licensed by Elvis’ estate and were also used in the new “Elvis” movie! He owns three of these Aloha Eagle jumpsuits\, two in white and a stunning black version as well! He also performs in the blue “Owl” suit as seen in the movie “Elvis on Tour” and the black\, gold and red “Matador” suit. No other Elvis Tribute Artist in Colorado has such an impressive collection of authentic suits! \nAaron always mixes a little humor and Elvis trivia into every hip-shaking show. He is often asked if he is lip-synching\, but it really is Aaron singing. He has even performed for two people who knew the real Elvis and both gave him high marks! \n \nAaron has always been an Elvis fan. As a child\, he saw Elvis perform live six times. He met his future wife the day after Elvis died when she asked him about the black armband he was wearing. They became best friends and were married several years later! \nBe sure to visit with our Partner Tables before and after the program! \n \n ..
