The number of fans the Denver Broncos represents is astronomical for the cow town where this American Football League first appeared. As the AFL was winding down its 10-year history\, many wanted to put this never-a-winner team out to pasture. Tales of that early team made for a dark start but once Denver gained top-level NFL status\, it was onward and upward (with a few setbacks). \nThat 1970 AFL/NFL combined football league boosted the start of the National Football League in its 50th season.  Since then\, the NFL has been in a stratosphere all its own in our sports hungry nation. \n\nCome take in the history of the Broncos and if you love another team … well lucky for you\, the presentation takes your team into account as a part of Denver sports history. Hopefully\, the Broncos won the biggest game played between the two\, but even if it is not the case\, Scott opens up a firehose that has been informing fans young and old for over 10 seasons. \nYou will hear how all teams rank in greatness or lousiness in regular seasons. (Of course\, we’ll talk Super Bowl wins\, also.) \nThe stories are fun\, and Scott doles out hope for all fans in his effort to track the Broncos to the same level of eliteness as his Dad’s NY Yankees. (Scott became a Mets fan at age ten living in Levittown NY – a year or so prior to becoming a Bronco fan.) \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: \nScott Perry was Blessed with the ability to learn and remember pro football history as a kid who had to endure 10 schools from K-12th. With zero interest in the sport until being introduced to “Inside the NFL” on HBO\, Scott found a love of the game because of the slow-motion videos capturing players scoring to heart-pounding orchestral music in each game’s highlight reel. \nHe lives in Littleton with his Missouri raised wife and a daughter he hopes catches the same fever for the best spectator sport around.  Scott is a former 7NEWS fan Of the Week and cherishes his voicemail informing him the man he considers the biggest part of Bronco success\, Pat Bowlen\, was a huge fan of his effort showing how great the Broncos have been since 1970. \nDo you know there is a Colorado Sports Hall-of- Fame Museum at the Broncos’ Stadium (Empower Field)? Sixty years later\, we can reflect on the factors leading up to the flood and\nthe impacts of the disaster on the people and environment\, as well as the legacy and lessons learned. Join us for an\nengaging presentation by Laura Kroeger\, executive director of Mile High Flood District\, on the 1965 Denver Flood.\nAbout our Presenter:  Laura Kroeger\n \nLaura Kroeger is the Executive Director of the Mile High Flood District\, formerly known as the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District. The MHFD was established by the Colorado legislature in 1969 to assist local governments in the Denver metropolitan area with multi-jurisdictional drainage and flood control challenges. MHFD covers an area of 1\,608 square miles that includes Denver\, parts of the six surrounding counties\, and 35 incorporated cities and towns. MHFD focuses its resources on over 1\,600 miles of major streams and serves a population of approximately 2.8 million. Laura has served as the executive director for over 3 years and prior to that has been a program manager and engineering director for the District. She has Bachelor’s of Science degree and a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering. Laura also is active in the American Public Works Association and is the Technical Director of Leadership and Management for the association. She was also recognized in 2019 as one of the Top Ten Leaders in Public Works for that year. Laura played a crucial role in restructuring MHFD to align its organizational structure with strategic goals using a Watershed Management Approach. Highlands Ranch \n$5 Suggested Donation for Non-HRHS members \nConsider applying the Donation to Membership!\nClick HERE for more info.\n \nDr. Van Arsdale will be selling and signing his books before and after the presentation. \nWe will explore early historical accounts\, since the 17th century\, of presumed and fantastical other-worldly beings; the 1924 U.S. attempt to receive signals from Mars; the 1947 incident at Roswell which shaped modern UFO mythology; the “Snippy the Horse” mutilation case; and the legacy of Dr. J. Allen Hynek (“Close Encounters of the Third Kind”). \nABOUT OUR SPEAKER: \nPeter W. Van Arsdale\, Ph.D.\, worked on the nationally renowned “Clearview Contact Case” from Colorado and the U.S. Air Force’s Project Blue Book UFO investigation. Contemporary UAP (unidentified anomalous phenomena) also will be discussed. \nDr. Van Arsdale retired as director of African Initiatives at the University of Denver and the Josef Korbel School of International Studies\, where he also served as Senior Lecturer. An applied cultural anthropologist\, he has worked in E. Africa\, S.E. Asia\, the Balkans\, Latin America\, the Caribbean\, and North America\, emphasizing community water resources\, human rights\, refugee resettlement\, and humanitarian intervention. \nPeter has investigated UFOs from an anthropological/psychological perspective as a scientific hobby for nearly 60 years. He is the author of Encounters: 50 Fascinating Strangers from My Life on the Road and a Fellow of the Explorers Club.  He currently is an Affiliate Faculty member (pro bono) at Regis University. \n \nBook signing prior and after the program. It was built by William and Charles Bent\, along with Ceran St. Vrain\, as a trading post for commerce with Native American tribes and other traders. Plains Indians were the primary customers of the Bent\, St. Vrain & Company\, and to be successful the company needed to approach the trade according to Indian customs and provide the goods and merchandise desired by the Indians. In the short term\, access to manufactured and imported goods vastly improved the day-to-day lives of the Indians. However\, over the long term the fur trade hastened the loss of their lifestyles and confinement to reservations. \nMr. Schaubs\, the Presenter\, will inform about the history of many real life Forts\, as well as touch on The Fort Restaurant. \n \n \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER:  MICHAEL SCHAUBS \nMr. Schaubs has had an interest in the culture of the fur trade since he was a child when he would walk corn rows outside of the Wisconsin community he grew up in and where he would find projectile points\, pot shards\, trade beads and gunflints.  On entering college\, he was undecided as to whether to pursue a course of study in geology or archeology.  It happened that his Geology 101 Prof was captivating\, and his Anthropology 101 Prof was mind-numbing.  So quite naturally\, he became a geologist.  On such small things the course of a lifetime can be determined. \nAlthough employed as a geologist since 1978\, he has maintained a keen interest in the fur trade throughout his life.  After retirement\, he developed a deep interest in fur trade inventories and the material culture of the fur trade and has applied his background as a scientist in evaluating these inventories.  He shares his passion and knowledge of the fur trade with the general public as a living history interpreter in the role of a fur trader at special events held at Bent’s Old Fort NHS\, Fort Laramie NHS\, Fort Uncompahgre (Old Spanish Trail Association)\, for the Tesoro Cultural Center\, and at numerous schools and public groups in the area in which he resides. \n \nPROGRAM SPONSOR:   CHARTER FINANCIAL –RICK MARTIN\, CPA \nRick will provide information and updates regarding the One Big Beautiful Bill and what it means to you!\n \n..

Of the 574 federally recognized Native American tribes in the United States\, over two dozen tribes claim their ancestors once lived in what is today the State of Colorado. While the precise number of tribes is difficult to verify\, this presentation will focus primarily on the Ute\, Pueblo\, Apache\, Comanche\, Cheyenne\, Arapahoe\, and to a lesser extent\, the Wyandotte Tribal Nations. \nThe Ute are recognized as indigenous people of Colorado. The Southern Ute and the Ute Mountain Ute are the only two Native American Reservations that remain in the State of Colorado. \nThis presentation is based in part on research that went into several of John’s books\, including Native American Prayer Trees of Colorado and A to Z Colorado’s Nearly Forgotten History 1776-1876. John will have an assortment of his books available and will be signing them. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER–JOHN WESLEY ANDERSON \n \nJohn Wesley Anderson\, MBA\, is a published author\, storyteller and TEDx speaker. He was awarded the Golden Quill Award in 2022 from the Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District. Prior to becoming a full-time author\, he enjoyed a 30-year law enforcement career\, with the Colorado Springs Police Department\, followed by 8 years as the elected Sheriff for El Paso County\, Colorado. After being term-limited as Sheriff\, John retired from public safety and worked homeland security for ten years in the corporate world. He retired from Lockheed Martin in 2012 to launch a small consulting business allowing him the freedom to pursue his love of history\, writing and the arts. The original Mission Viejo land grant in California dates to the Spanish colonial era\, and the nearby mission at San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1776. Modern Mission Viejo\, California\, was developed in the 1960s and was considered ahead of its time. The Aurora project\, initiated in 1972\, replicated many of the California features\, including Spanish-style architecture and the mission bell. The community emphasized community building\, with initiatives like the Nadadores swim team and the Heritage House. The Aurora project also included extensive green spaces and integrated commercial and residential areas. Highlands Ranch residents will find many striking similarities in the Highlands Ranch community. Todd will highlight the company’s and communities’ unique characteristics. Small of stature and quiet in manner\, he often went unnoticed among the more celebrated founding fathers in our nation’s history. \nAnd yet\, when we examine carefully the accounts of the first generation\, we find that Madison was almost always there when the most crucial decisions were made. We discover his quiet presence calling for specific actions that would protect our tenuous liberty and safeguard the newly created institutions designed to enhance that liberty. \nWe also admire his perceptive choice of the extraordinary Dolley Madison to be his wife—a fitting companion for this public servant!!  As the First Lady\, Dolley brought glamour to The White House. \nThis PowerPoint presentation will examine Madison’s role in the creation of the United States of America and his eventual service as the president who guided the country through the tumultuous years of the War of 1812\, a conflict that proved this new country was strong enough to take its place amongst the nations of the world. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: MARY SUDMAN DONOVAN \n \nMary Sudman Donovan is a local historian and author. On the surface it is a plain Jane\, but so much more lies beneath it’s quiet facade. \nHear the fascinating history of this original Landscaping Business owners and builder-Matthew Plews and Family. Over the years the property was sold to local gangster family Smiling Charlie\, and then to the manufacturing family of the Eberhardts. Johnny Bowen and family obtained the land\, and promptly named it The Fly’n B\, as the Bowens had airplanes and runways on the property. Wind Crest purchased the land and deeded the Park and Plews house to HR Metro District.  What is in store for this former active and important property? \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER:  FORREST DYKSTRA \n \nForrest is recently retired as the Manager of Engineering for the Highlands Ranch Metro District in Highlands Ranch\, Colorado. He had been with the Metro District in the Engineering Department\nfor over 35 years. He has been the project manager for many major capital civil projects\, including roadway\, traffic signal\, major storm drainage and channel stabilization projects and\nbuilding and renovation projects. He has been responsible for compliance with the stormwater permit since 2004.  And most importantly for this talk\, Forrest knew and interacted many times over the years with the Bowen family\, the last family to own the Fly’n B property. Forrest has lived in Highlands Ranch since 1982 when he married his wife Diane and has seen the community grow from a few thousand people to where it is today. He received a BA degree from Central College\, Iowa with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. He also received a MS degree from Stanford University in Petroleum Engineering. Be prepared to celebrate this special month in the Denver area by understanding the culture and significance of various events and activities. \nTonight’s program will be primarily focusing on Japanese culture and the Denver experience.  Although Japanese food and pop culture have gone “mainstream\,” the history of Japanese Americans in Colorado is often overlooked. Gil Asakawa will present a talk that gives that history\, including the incarceration of almost 10\,000 people of Japanese heritage at Amache\, one of ten incarceration sites established during WWII. The camp in southeastern Colorado near Granada is now designated as a National Historic Site. Gil will also talk about the Japantown area along Larimer Street that is now concentrated at Sakura Square\, the hub of the local Japanese community. \nABOUT OUR SPEAKER: GIL ASAKAWA \nGil Asakawa is a cultural consultant\, journalist\, author and blogger whose topics include Japan\, Japanese Americans and Asian Americans. He is a nationally-known speaker\, panelist and expert on Japanese American and Asian American history and identity. He has authored several books of which the latest is “Tabemasho! Let’s Eat!”\, a history of Japanese food in America. He will have this book available for purchase. \nABOUT OUR PERFORMER:  TONI YAGAMI \nEnjoy the special presentation of Taiko drumming with a short performance courtesy of Taiko With Toni–“Thrill to the Thunderous Sounds of the Taiko”.   Toni Yagami is performing\, in traditional costume\, using taiko drums\, and throughout the group’s musical presentations\, the audience will be delighted.  Before taiko\, Toni Yagami received a BA in music education and taught instrumental music in the public school system\, played oboe in a community orchestra\, and assisted with the Denver Jr. Police Band.  In 1979\, she joined Denver Taiko and never looked back. She became a member of the professional taiko company\, San Jose Taiko\, in 1988\, then returned to Denver in 1995 (married Lance Acker) and started her own taiko group. Currently\, Toni\, Lance and members from their current rehearsal group and classes\, combine the joyous sounds of Japanese taiko\, hand percussion\, bamboo flutes\, and a “swinging” jazz clarinet\, as they play traditional folk and contemporary tunes.\nJapanese culture and history are intermingled with various other cultures throughout our musical presentation. It reintroduces the well-known 1967 mystery of Snippy\, which made front-page news worldwide\, about an Appaloosa horse from the San Luis Valley\, whose strange death sparked one of Colorado’s most enduring enigmas\, alongside the state’s rich history of UFOs\, paranormal activity\, and cryptid encounters. NEW evidence and never-before-seen documents\, photos\, and recordings have been discovered. \n \nTogether\, Tony and Katie will unveil new findings\, including rare A.P.R.O. and N.I.C.A.P. documents\, archival recordings\, and never-before-seen color photographs of Snippy\, shedding light on events at the King family ranch. Angiola is particularly known for his in-depth research and investigative work on the 1964 Socorro\, New Mexico UFO case.
