He will also provide a brief overview of how critical both water and power infrastructures are woven together into the very fabric of life throughout history. Glenn will describe a journey that started with his work on sustainable human habitat in 1978\, the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011\, and the study of the US EMP Congressional Commission in 2014.\nAlso included are: Roman Aqueducts\, Nuclear Coolant Water Security\, Viruses  And America’s Secure Energy Future. \nThree US Congressional EMP Reports of 2006\, 2008\, and 2017 presented to the nation that both water and power are threatened as never before envisioned by modern human society.\nWhy is there such a surge of interest in this topic?\nWhat is the science behind the threats to the power grid? How safe is our national power grid? How safe is our worldwide power grid? Can a small part of America be bold enough to show the rest of the country that the protection of both water and power systems\, at a minimum\, is a goal? Can we as a community working together\, with a complex mix of players\, guard against newly discovered existential threats that could take these resources away forever?\nIs it possible that damage to only nine of the 55\,000 grids could cause a complete grid down environment for many years? What would that look like?  Why would it take many years to get our grids operational again?\n \nMr. Rhoades will address these questions and participate in follow up discussions about the electrical grid challenge. RHOADES\n \nGlenn E. Rhoades\, Director of National Operations of The Electromagnetic Pulse Task Force on National and Homeland Security\, which is an official US Congressional Advisory Board working at supporting the EMP Congressional Caucus Co-Chaired by Colorado Representative (R) Doug Lamborn and New York Representative (D) Yvette Clarke.\nGlenn was the founder\, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Colorado Nanotech Initiative\, Inc.\nPrior to that\, he spent 35 years at Martin Marietta/Lockheed Martin\, Home Depot\, Best Buy\, Lowes\, and Jefferson County Government and State Initiatives in various positions including: engineering planning\, sales/consulting\, interior space and facility operations\, and administration and subcontract management.\nGlenn has been involved with projects including the Instrumentation and Flight Safety System Program\, the Small Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Program\, the Peacekeeper Missile Program\, the Barstow\, California Heliostat Project and was involved with various interplanetary spacecraft.\nIn 2014 he joined the EMP Task Force under the leadership of The US Congressional EMP Commission Chief of Staff\, Dr. Peter V. DESCRIPTION:Historic Douglas County\, Inc Presents Its New Book \nDouglas County Colorado: Prehistory to 2020\nMonday\, May 15\, 2023  6:30 pm Doors Open\, 7:00-8:30 pm program\nSouthridge Recreation Center\, Upstairs Auditorium\n4800 McArthur Ranch Rd\n$3 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n\n  \nIn the early 1990s\, Douglas County was the fastest growing county in the U.S.  By 2020\, it had surpassed 350\,000.  For most of its 160-year history\, the county was overwhelmingly agricultural. But over time\, its farms\, cattle ranches\, and dairy farms were replaced by subdivisions\, shopping centers\, and towns of varying size. While parts of the county grew rapidly\, the people in other parts decided to remain small. Historically\, all residents experienced both natural disasters and human-made calamities. They experienced economic depressions and periods of prosperity. For decades\, they have worried about their water supply\, how much growth they wanted\, and how to create a livable future. The most important part of the Douglas County story is its hardworking and forward-looking people who argued about many things while they loved DC as a wonderful place to live. \nHistoric Douglas County\, Inc will introduce its new book Douglas County Colorado: Prehistory to 2020 and highlight several of its surprising contents in a PowerPoint presentation. \n \nPresenters: \n\nTim Weber is on the board of Historic Douglas County\, Inc. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and taught graduate-level history in four different institutions for thirty years in Colorado\, Kentucky\, Illinois\, and Tennessee. He and his wife Linda have lived in Castle Rock since 2005.\nLarry Schlupp is a longstanding member of Historic Douglas County\, Inc.\, Larkspur Historical Society\, and Colorado Preservation\, Inc. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 17\, 2023  6:30 pm Doors Open\, 7:00-8:30 pm program\nSouthridge Recreation Center\, Upstairs Auditorium\n4800 McArthur Ranch Rd\n$3 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nTrees have played an important role in the growth and development of this Northern Douglas County area.  From the earliest tropical forests of millions of years ago\, to today’s modern TREE CITY USA designation\, the trees of Highlands Ranch and the local area have continued to flourish\, with deep roots in our community.  Petrified wood found locally reveals the former tropical landscape that today we call Douglas County.  The early pioneers relied upon the Timber Culture Act to provide acres of free government land\, and the many forests supported the lumber industry.  Today\, there are thousands of trees in Highlands Ranch\, and the community proudly boasts the designation of Tree City\, USA.  In April of 2022\, that designation was once again bestowed upon HR for the 34th year!   This program will be presented in two parts–the THEN\, looking at the history of trees and their significance in and around Highlands Ranch\, and the NOW\, which will explore the role trees play in the modern community\, including the Tree City USA award.  \nABOUT OUR PRESENTERS: \nNancy Linsenbigler\, HRHS Board Member and Long TimeDavid Johnston\, President of Highlands Ranch Historical Society\, will discuss the THEN\, history of local Trees. \n  \nStephen Looney\, Arborist with Highlands Ranch Metro District\, will discuss the NOW\, trees and their importance to Highlands Ranch. \nHighlands Ranch Metro District Forestry Technician Steve Looney prunes a large juniper tree in one of the Metro District’s 26 parks. Gateway Dr.\,  Highlands Ranch\n$3 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nRoy Dixon\, who once was a young cowboy on the Phipps Ranch\, (the young man above\, wearing a red shirt)\,  has returned to the days of his youth!   Roy will delight the audience with his tales of life as a ranch hand\, working cattle\, the land\, and the 60’s. Just what is involved in “working cattle”??  What types of chores must be done to keep the cattle in check\, and his job!??  The Phipps Ranch\, also known as Highlands Ranch\, was indeed a working cattle ranch since being purchased by Lawrence Phipps Jr. in the 1930’s.  There are many aspects to running a ranch\, and ranch hands were a critical component to keeping cattle happy\, healthy and profitable. \nRoy will share his memories of working on the ranch during the 1960’s\, including \n\nsome of the people who he worked with (Bob Swofford\, Bud Morgan and John Peraro other ranch hands)\ncaring for the cattle and all that entailed\nlife on and off the ranch\n\nRoy will also touch upon the State of the Cattle Industry Today. \nSpecial Guests who will be sharing a bit of stories include John Peraro (fellow ranch hand) and Dr. Marvin Beeman (veterinarian) \nThis is a special presentation and will be held at the Highlands Ranch Mansion. \nDoors open at 6:00 pm for self-guided tours of the Mansion\, aided by Docents strategically placed throughout the Mansion. \nThe program starts at 7:00 pm. \nPre-registration is Required \n \nAbout our Presenter:   Roy Dixon\nRoy is returning to Highlands Ranch for this special talk from his home in Kansas. As a youth here in Colorado\, his parents were friends with Lawrence C. Phipps Sr.\, Jr.\, and the Third. After college\, Roy worked full time for Mr. Phipps and served under Bob Swofford\, General Manager and Bud Morgan/Assistant General Manager and Foreman. Mr. Phipps Jr.\, Bob Swofford and Bud Morgan’s key focus on him was to be both a focused cowboy AND diversification in the business world. The combination was and is a must.    Today\, Roy owns a successful business\, Highlands Lifestock Service\, and is highly involved in the community. Among his pursuits: Lifestock\, Nutrition\, Formulated Rations\, Feed\, Management Programs\, Cattle Procurement\, Agri-Business\, Business Development and Growth\, Government and Public Relations. He serves the greater Kansas and Surrounding Regions.

DESCRIPTION:                                                                                                                        MILE HOUSES ALONG CHERRY CREEK\n\nMonday\, November 21\, 2022  6:30 pm Book Signing\, 7:00-8:30 pm program\nHighlands Ranch Southridge Recreation Center\,\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Upstairs Auditorium\n$3 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nThe Cherry Creek Valley has long served as a major transportation corridor\, from Native American footpaths to the proposed route of Interstate 25.\nIn the 1860s\, six “Mile Houses” along Cherry Creek provided food\, lodging\, and other services for travelers heading to\, or returning from\, Denver and the “Pike’s Peak” gold fields.\nNamed for their distance from Denver\, the mile houses sat on the combined Smoky Hill and Cherokee trails.\n17 Mile House \n \nThe fate of the six houses varied greatly.\nTwo remain\, open to the public as living history farms.\nA third was converted into a garage of a private residence.\nTwo houses are completely gone\, one replaced by urban sprawl\, the site of the second now under water.\nThe sixth house was moved to a small eastern Colorado town\, where it served as a liquor store.\n20 Mile House \n \nLee Whiteley is a 4th generation Coloradan who now lives in Centennial. He graduated from the University of Denver and spent two years in the U.S. Army\, including a year in Vietnam. Lee took a very early retirement from the City and County of Denver\, where he was a computer programmer-analyst. He and wife Jane have authored seven books on transportation history in the West\, including books on the Cherokee Trail and Smoky Hill Trail. DESCRIPTION:Program: Highlands Ranch and the Colorado Gold Rush Sparked By Local Creek\nMonday\, October 17\, 2022 – 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm\nDoors open at 6:30 pm for book signing and refreshments.\nSouthridge Recreation Center\, Upstairs Auditorium\n$3 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nThis presentation is about two discoveries: a recent very minor discovery by Rolf Asphaug of an intriguing little label on a local map\, and the earthshaking\, world-changing 164-year-old discovery which that label referenced. It is mainly of the 1859 Colorado Gold Rush started on rivers that go through the Highlands Ranch area and utterly transformed our region\, but also how any one of us today can rekindle our history by keeping our eyes open to little things around us.\nRolf’s HRHS slide show (with captions) arose from on an article he recently wrote for his local homeowners’ association newsletter and later posted on the NextDoor website. This posting gained nearly 1\,000 “likes” and prompted nearly 200 comments\, including wonderful additions. He later developed his article into a presentation to support his becoming a Certified Interpretive Guide under the National Association for Interpretation … and now has revised and expanded it for the Highlands Ranch Historical Society. History told by a series of pictures.\nRolf Asphaug\n\nRolf Asphaug is a retired General Counsel for the Regional Transportation District. He is a volunteer park patroller and naturalist for Jefferson County Open Space\, Chatfield State Park\, Castlewood Canyon State Park\, Staunton State Park\, Golden Gate Canyon State Park and at the Carson Nature Center at South Platte Park. He is a former president of the Colorado Mountain Club and a founding board member of the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative.\nRolf’s wife’s great-great-grandparents came to Colorado in the 1859 Gold Rush\, and her great-great-grandmother’s journal became a book – “Mollie: The Journal of Mollie Dorsey Sanford in Nebraska and Colorado Territories” – that is still in print today. Mollie’s home is still standing in downtown Littleton – a house bought by gold dust.\n                                                            Skot Latona                                                                                                    \nSkot Latona will be narrating Rolf’s historical slide presentation and adding additional information. He is bringing panning equipment (and may even share some locations to pan with us).\nSkot has served as the Manager of South Platte Park\, South Suburban Parks and Recreation\,  in Littleton\, since 2010 after managing the interpretation and education programs for the previous 12 years.  He has led nature and cultural heritage tours through Littleton\, around the west\, and internationally for over 30 years and is a trainer for public\, nationally recognized Interpretive Guide certification courses\, Colorado Native Plant Master\, and Audubon Master Naturalist and Master Birder programs.  Skot’s mentor in gold panning was the late Ray Simpson\, state representative\, mining expert\, former commissioner of the Colorado Land Board and amateur prospector who developed S Platte Park’s gold panning field trips for 4thtgraders since the mid-1990s.\n \nGOLD PANNING  DEMONSTRATION and Hands-on Practice\nGold panning\, also known as placer mining is the technique used capture gold that has been deposited in streams and rivers through erosion\, glacial action and general movement of earth.   Also known as free gold because it has broken free of where it was deposited in the earth eons ago in what is generally believed to be the explosions of neutron stars. Members of the Gold Prospectors of the Rockies Gordon Smith and his wife Yvonne\, will be on hand to demonstrate this technique. Gordon is on the board of the club and will also be happy to answer any questions about club activities and membership\n \n \nTHREE authors will have their books for purchase and signing. \nCash and Checks only for PATHWAY TO GOLD and ENGLEWOOD’S AMAZING HISTORY.\nCredit Cards accepted for FINDING GOLD IN COLORADO books.\n \nJuly 20\, 1858:  Gold was found in Little Dry Creek that later became the Englewood\, CO area. It changed the course of history in the United States.\n“Englewood’s Amazing Story” by Douglas Cohn is about the many inspiring and inventive people who have made their home in Englewood\, CO. It also includes a fascinating\, easy to read history our area played in the Colorado Gold Rush.\nDouglas Cohn is a Colorado native and longtime Englewood resident who has a big heart for history. He fell in love with Colorado history in the 8th grade when he was a picture of the “face on the barroom floor” in Central City. He is a graduate of Englewood High (1965)\, the University of Colorado (1969) and the Conservative Baptist Seminary (1972). He ran a halfway house in Denver for six years for homeless young people. His family owned the Bonnie Brae Hobby Shop.\nDoug has served on the Englewood Historic Preservation Society Board for 10 years. He loves learning about history and has shared history stories in the Englewood Schools\, senior centers and History Camp Colorado. He is active in the Rocky Mountain Railroad Heritage Society and has been working with the City of Englewood to produce the YouTube video series “Englewood: Moments in History”.\n\nLee and Jane Whiteley have written seven books relating to the history of transportation in the West. Their latest book is “Pathway to Gold\,” a history of the Smoky Hill Trail. This wagon and stagecoach road was blazed specifically for the 1859 “Pike’s Peak” gold rush. The trail ran from several Missouri River towns to Denver.\nLee is the featured presenter for our November 21\, 2022 program\, where he will discuss these transportation pathways and the importance to our area\, along with fascinating information about the many “mile houses” that ran from Denver to Parker. Two of these Mile Houses are still available for visiting and reliving the past! Lee will also have an assortment of his 7 books.\n \nFinding Gold in Colorado\nKevin Singel caught gold fever at the age of six when his father read a National Geographic magazine article about gold prospecting to him. Arriving in Colorado in 1989\, one of his first weekends was spent buying gold pans and learning to pan. He is passionate about the hobby and art that is small scale mining and prospecting. DESCRIPTION:“Tree of Hope–Anne Frank’s Father Shares His Wisdom \nWith an American Teen and the World”\nMonday\, August 15\, 2022 – 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\, Upstairs Auditorium\n \nAuthor and motivational speaker\, Cara Wilson-Granat shares uplifting lessons gleaned from a 20-year correspondence with Anne Frank’s father.\nThis PowerPoint program is a historical re-cap of Anne Frank and her family\, in particular her father\, Otto Frank\, and how this legendary Holocaust survivor–who believed in the power of love over hate–transformed an entire “family” of young people who reached out to him\, including Cara.\nSome of Cara’s letters from Otto Frank were used by investigators from Cold Case. 60 Minutes showcased examples of various Cold Case scenarios that determined who most likely turned in hiding families shortly before the end of the war.\nCara has donated letters from Otto Frank to the U of SC Anne Frank Center\,  an official partner of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. This collection establishes the Anne Frank Archive on the 75th anniversary of her diary.\nLocated on the U of SC campus\, it brings to life the experience of the Frank family and four others who spent two years hiding in Nazi German-occupied Amsterdam during World War II.\nThe Franks were discovered in 1944 and sent to concentration camps shortly before the end of the war. Otto was the only member of his family to survive.\n  \nCara Wilson-Granat is an author\, storyteller\, motivational speaker\,\nTEDx speaker\, and World Class Performer.\nCara is often asked to be a consultant for\, as well as a participant\, in documentaries on Otto Frank. Highlands Ranch\n\nNorman Rockwell held up a friendly mirror of our lives.\nMillions of Americans viewed his illustrations on the cover of the “Saturday Evening Post”.\nThis PowerPoint presentation is a Behind The Scenes look provided by his Stockbridge\, Massachusetts neighbor\, model and young friend\, Oliver “Cookie” Kempton.\nOliver will present his personal view and stories as well as the insights of how\, when\, and the why of Rockwell’s paintings.\nThis presentation will contain pictures of Rockwell\, his models as they pose for the paintings\, and the\nsteps from sketches to the final painting.\n \nFrom the book\, “102 Favorite Paintings by Norman Rockwell”.\nWhen Norman Rockwell was a young illustrator\, in his early twenties\, he was told if he wanted to make something of himself\, he should shoot for the stars. The top market for illustrators was The Saturday Evening Post. Norman painted two covers and made a sketch for a third. He took the train to Philadelphia where he presented his work to the Post’s art editor. Norman was left to wait impatiently. When the art editor returned\, he was informed that the Post would purchase both of the finished works\, wanted him to develop the sketch for a third cover and was ready to commission three more. SUMMARY:A to Z Colorado's Nearly Forgotten History  1776 - 1876
DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person event at Southridge Recreation Center\, 4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch.   The event opens at 6:30 pm\, for networking\, cookies\, and book purchase.  $3 suggested donation for non-HRHS members.  Registration Required \n  \n \nJohn Anderson’s presentation is about his storybook on Colorado history.  26 short stories\, each a chapter\, one for each letter of the alphabet. Within each chapter are interrelated historical vignettes of real people\, places and events which served as building blocks providing the foundation upon which the State of Colorado was built. The common threads that run through these are people\, places and events that happened within a 100 year period\, in what is today Colorado\, and are at risk of being forgotten.\n \n 1776-1876\, was one of unprecedented change worldwide. Change was the catalyst which fueled the birth of a nation\, the United States of America in 1776. This book culminates in 1876 with the addition of a new state being added to that union – Colorado. Before Colorado had earned the right to become the 38th State of the United States\, it was first forged in the calloused hands of indigenous\, Spanish\, French\, Mexican and American people who lived during this century of conflict. \n \nJohn Wesley Anderson\, MBA\, is an author\, storyteller and TEDx speaker. He enjoyed a 30-year law enforcement career\, retiring as a sergeant after 22 years with the Colorado Springs Police Department\, followed by 8 years serving as the elected county sheriff for El Paso County\, Colorado. After being term-limited as Sheriff\, John retired from public safety and worked in homeland security for 10 years in the corporate world. He retired from Lockheed Martin in 2012 to launch a small consulting business allowing him the freedom to pursue his love of history\, writing and the arts. DESCRIPTION:Disasters in History: The South Platte River Flood of 1965\nFlood season is on the horizon\, but the South Platte River is less likely to experience “an outstanding hydrologic event” because of the lessons learned from the June 1965 flood.\nEinar Jensen will dissect the factors leading to the flood and the flood’s short-term and long-term impacts to our community.\nThis presentation will include tips on how to make our families and property safer from flooding.\nEinar Jensen\, Risk Reduction Specialist\, South Metro Fire Rescue\nRisk Reduction Specialist Einar Jensen works for South Metro Fire Rescue.  He was a firefighter for 15 years and has now been in the fire service for 24 years.
