SUMMARY:February Program: Thomas Jefferson--Third President of the United States
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Official Presidential portrait of Thomas Jefferson (by Rembrandt Peale\, 1800) \n \nMonday\, February 17\, 2025\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \n \nThe extraordinary life of this very complex man. Surely Thomas Jefferson was the most able and the most complex of America’s first presidents. One might look simply at the volume of paperwork he produced over his 83 years\, his architectural drawings\, the number of original inventions he incorporated into the building of his beloved Monticello\, the careful botanical observations and experiments he conducted and the massive plans he prepared for the University of Virginia to prove that he was an extraordinary scientist and engineer. \n \nMonticello by Thomas Jefferson \nOne must add to the picture his long experience as a politician and public servant: representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses\, delegate to the Continental Congress\, Governor of Virginia\, American Minister to France\, U.S. Secretary of State\, Vice President and then President of the United States. \nIn the complex creation of a new nation\, it was often Jefferson’s ideas and philosophy that helped shape the states. \nThis program will present an overview of the biography of Thomas Jefferson\, looking most closely at his role in shaping the United States and delving into his family life at Monticello that sustained him through his long public service career. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: \nMary Sudman Donovan \nMary Sudman Donovan is a historian and author. She earned a Ph.D. in American history at Columbia University and has taught American and World History. Having taught for many years at Hunter College of the City University of New York\, she now teaches Learners’ Courses at Wind Crest in Highlands Ranch. Mary’s interest in Thomas Jefferson was sparked by the fact that her husband\, Herbert Donovan\, grew up in Charlottesville\, Virginia and attended the University of Virginia. She could see how pervasive Thomas Jefferson’s influence was on the culture and mind set of that small city and how it shaped the education that was offered at “Mr. Jefferson’s University.” \nPROGRAM SPONSOR: Rick Martin\, CPA\, Charter Financial. \nRick Martin\, CPA\, Charter Financial will have a partner table and provide some insight into the upcoming INCOME TAX RETURNS. California wildfire victims qualify for automatic tax extension until October 15th. What does that mean for them? And what can YOU learn from that now. Rick can be reached at http://www.cfrusa.com/\n

JonBenet was murdered in her family’s home in Boulder\, Colorado\, on Christmas night 1996. This presentation will share 20 of Detective Lou Smit’s original investigative slides which shows compelling evidence of an intruder. \nThis PowerPoint presentation includes evidence foreign to the crime scene. Also\, conclusive DNA evidence left on the body which excluded all members of the Ramsey family from being involved in the attempted kidnapping and murder. \nABOUT OUR SPEAKER: JOHN WESLEY ANDERSON\nJohn Wesley Anderson\, MBA\, is an author\, TEDx speaker\, and recipient of the 2022 Golden Quill Award presented by the Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District. He retired after 30-year law enforcement career; including 22 years with the Colorado Springs Police Department and 8 years as the Sheriff for El Paso County\, Colorado. After being term-limited as Sheriff John worked homeland and corporate security for 10 years for Lockheed Martin. He retired in 2012 to pursue his passions for history\, writing\, and the arts. \nAlthough John has traveled around the world\, including several adventures on a catamaran sailing the Caribbean\, three corporate security assignments into a combat zone on the Horn of Africa\, and landing on an aircraft carrier at sea in the Pacific Ocean\, he remains most fascinated by the rich history and art discovered in his own backyard in the American Southwest. \nThe book Lou and JonBenet will be available for purchase (as well as some of his other books). Checks and cash only. \nOr it can be purchased in advance in hardcover\, softcover\, eBook\, or audiobook online at www.Amazon.com. SUMMARY:Program: A Fun Evening with Erma Bombeck
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 21\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n\nThree days a week in over 900 papers across the country\, Erma Bombeck’s column At Wit’s End captured the ups and downs of a new American phenomenon\, the suburban housewife.\nFiguring you had to be able to laugh at life to get through it\, Ms. Bomback brought to American awareness the struggles of women whose lives otherwise felt invisible and taken for granted. She let women across America know:\n“You are not alone. We number in the millions. I\, too\, am an American housewife\, and I will laugh by your side.”\n \nWe will find out how Erma got started as a humorist. You will surely chuckle along as she pokes fun at kids\, husbands\, household appliances\, and especially herself.\nThis program includes a monologue in-character\, a Q&A “with Erma” and a Q&A with the scholar/presenter\, Susan Marie Frontczak.\nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: SUSAN MARIE FRONTCZAK\nSusan Marie Frontczak has given over 875 Living History presentations as Marie Curie\, Mary Shelley\, Irene Castle\, Clara Barton\, Eleanor Roosevelt\, and Erma Bombeck across 43 of the United States. She also works with both students and adults to develop their own Living History presentations and is the author of the Young Chautauqua handbooks for Colorado Humanities.\n \nSusan Marie joins millions of Erma Bombeck fans in the U.S. and around the world in celebrating one of the 20th century’s most prolific writers and humorists. As a teen\, she competed with her mother to see which of them could snag the monthly Good Housekeeping magazine in order to be the first to read Erma Bombeck’s column.\nSusan Marie says the hardest part of presenting as Erma Bombeck is choosing what to include from a seemingly endless supply of priceless material. It is a puzzle she is glad to take on as none of her other characters have given her so much to laugh at along the way.

SUMMARY:Program: Rick Crandall and the Colorado Freedom Memorial --25 Years in the Making and More to Come
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 16\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nOn May 30\, 2000\, Rick Crandall broadcast his morning radio show from the American Cemetery above Omaha Beach in Normandy\, France. After the four-hour program the equipment was packed up and the thank-yous were shared and then Rick took one last walk through the cemetery not realizing he would be carrying something home with him and it was something he couldn’t shake. \nFor the last 25 years the Colorado Freedom Memorial and Rick Crandall have been synonymous. What started as an idea after a radio broadcast from France has become one of the most unique military memorials in the country\, and it’s about to get bigger! \n \nThis is the first memorial in America dedicated to ALL wars\, ALL branches of service and containing the names of all those who died from a single state in those wars.\n \nThe Colorado Freedom Memorial is located in Aurora\, Colorado near Buckley Air Force Base. Constructed of glass panels that reflect Colorado’s mountains and blue skies the Memorial holds the names of over 6\,000 Coloradans killed or missing in action. They are grouped by war\, but names will not be alphabetically listed. Much of the Colorado Freedom Memorial is meant to reflect the chaos of war\, including the shuffling of names. \n \nPRESENTER: RICK CRANDALL \n \nFor 30 years Rick was the host of the Breakfast Club on AM 1430\, KEZW and during that time built a close relationship with the veteran community. In 2012 Rick was named the Colorado Broadcaster of the Year for his work on the air and with numerous nonprofit organizations. It is\, though\, the Colorado Freedom Memorial that is closest to his heart. \n PARTNER TABLES AND EVENTS\n \nChristopher M. Falkel American Legion Post 1260 Will be on hand to Present and Retire the Colors. Post Commander Joe Langran will give a brief update on the name change of the Highlands Ranch Post to the Christopher M. Falkel American Legion Post 1260. \nThere will also be a table with information about the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument.

DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Ai \nTravel through Deep Geologic Time across the Highlands Ranch Area\n \nMonday\, August 19\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nDr. Donna Anderson\, Affiliate Faculty in Geology\, Colorado School of Mines\, is the presenter. She will be discussing landscape changes and time traveling through HR and Colorado. \nLandscape changes over the last 500+ million years will be highlighted in this PowerPoint presentation\, which will also include a short video. \nContinents came together and split apart several times while traveling from the tropics at sea level to today’s middle latitude and mountain elevations. Each landscape hosted incredibly different and now-extinct plants and animals\, leaving behind a rich fossil record\, including those in Highlands Ranch. \nA short video will show how the plates have changed over the last 4 billion years. \nSee how Geoscience helps us as a society. \nA colleague from the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists will have a display table with rocks and fossils and will be available to answer questions. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: DR. DONNA ANDERSON \n \nDr. Donna Anderson\, Affiliate Faculty in Geology\, Colorado School of Mines is a semi-retired geologist\, working since 1974 in geotechnical engineering in California and later in the oil and gas industry in the western U.S. and internationally. She received a B.A. in Earth Science and Geography at Cal State Fullerton (1974)\, a M.S. in Geology at UCLA (1980)\, and a Ph.D. in Geology (sedimentology/stratigraphy) at Mines (1997). Her post-Ph.D. career interwove industry and academia as a consultant and geological advisor in the oil and gas industry\, retiring in 2015. \nSince 2000\, she has been on the faculty in the Mines Dept. of Geology and Geological Engineering as a research professor and Affiliate Faculty. She has taught undergraduate and graduate students in the field\, core lab\, and classroom and has been on dozens of Mines thesis committees across departments. \nThroughout her career Donna has participated in geologic societies\, foundations\, and local community groups\, and is a Past President of the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists and is currently on the Board of the Dinosaur Ridge Foundation. Having moved toward community outreach\, she enjoys peeling back the layers of the geologic landscape for the non-geologist. \nDr. Donna Anderson and co-author Paul Haseman recently published Golden Rocks: The Geology and Mining History of Golden\, Colorado\, a free eBook in the Arthur Lakes digital repository. \n \n

SUMMARY:Program: Rocky Mountain Ranch UFO Sightings\, Government Cover-Ups
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, July 15\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nJoin Katie Paige\, researcher investigator author\, as she shares her latest discoveries concerning the Rocky Mountain Ranch and surrounding areas. She will be discussing the possibility of deep CIA coverups\, MKUltra’s LSD mind control programs\, sonic and ultrasonic frequency non-lethal military warfare\, as well as “talking” laser plasma balls and much more.\nAre the phenomena experienced and their UFO/paranormal related\, or is it all a ruse intended to distract from the nefarious activities conducted there\, or both?\nThe Rocky Mountain Ranch was investigated by the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization and others in the 1970’s but the activity continues to this day! It is the location of the biggest remote viewing project ever conducted\, (even by the CIA and DIA). Many strange activities experienced on the ranch will be shared in this PowerPoint presentation.\nNewspaper headlines dubbed the ranch the “Close Encounter Capital of the US”. Rocky Mountain Ranch has been written about in several books. It has been featured on the History Channels: Beyond Skinwalker\, Beyond Belief\, UFO Witness\, Small Town Monsters\, and other programs.\nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: KATIE PAIGE\n \nKatie Paige has personal ties to High Strangeness Ranch in Colorado\, now known as the “Rocky Mountain Ranch”. In UFO folklore it was known as the “Clearview” Ranch\, and pre-dates the infamous “Skinwalker Ranch” by over a decade. This is what motivated her interest in ufology\, to find answers to her experiences\, and to try and uncover the truth as to what was happening there.\nSee her on History Channel’s Beyond Skinwalker\, UFO Witness\, Gaia’s Beyond Belief\, Ancient Aliens\, Small Town Monsters\, On the Trail of UFO’s Night Visitors\, and the film Accidental Truth.\nKatie\, who has a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication\, conducts independent investigations and research through her Rocky Mountain Ranch Research foundation. SUMMARY:Program: Becoming an Elvis Tribute Artist plus the Elvis Denver Connection
DESCRIPTION:.. \nMonday\, April 15\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nAaron Black will present a Tribute to Elvis in Concert show (yes\, Elvis will be performing!) and then will explain how he became an Elvis Tribute Artist (ETA). Will some lucky ladies in the front row get a scarf or a lei? The program concludes with a history of Elvis in Denver and Aaron will answer questions about ETA’s and Elvis trivia. Are you familiar with the Elvis sandwich? \n \nAaron Black has been performing his Award-Winning Tribute to Elvis for over 25 years. He has won two “Best-in-Show” awards at the Air Force Talent competitions and many other awards! Aaron has performed in two television commercials (one local\, one nation-wide) and in one radio commercial and was a finalist for a recent Apple nationwide commercial. \nThe 5 Elvis Suits that he currently wears are authentic $4000 recreations of Elvis’ most famous suits\, including the Aloha Eagle Jumpsuit worn in the Aloha From Hawaii TV Concert! These suits are created by some of the same people who created Elvis’ original suits and are licensed by Elvis’ estate and were also used in the new “Elvis” movie! He owns three of these Aloha Eagle jumpsuits\, two in white and a stunning black version as well! He also performs in the blue “Owl” suit as seen in the movie “Elvis on Tour” and the black\, gold and red “Matador” suit. No other Elvis Tribute Artist in Colorado has such an impressive collection of authentic suits! \nAaron always mixes a little humor and Elvis trivia into every hip-shaking show. He is often asked if he is lip-synching\, but it really is Aaron singing. He has even performed for two people who knew the real Elvis and both gave him high marks! \n \nAaron has always been an Elvis fan. As a child\, he saw Elvis perform live six times. He met his future wife the day after Elvis died when she asked him about the black armband he was wearing. They became best friends and were married several years later! \nBe sure to visit with our Partner Tables before and after the program! \n \n ..

SUMMARY:Program: UFOs and the Navajo Rangers ----- Paranormal Cases From the Navajo Nation
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 16\, 2023\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$3 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nPresenters: \nJonathan Dover\, Ranger Lieutenant (Ret.) and Stanley Milford Jr. Ranger Sergeant (Ret.)\nThis presentation will cover paranormal investigations that were conducted by Jonathan Dover and Stanley Milford Jr. during an 11 year span within Navajo Nation lands located in Arizona\, New Mexico\, and Utah. These include cases involving UFO’s\, Bigfoot\, Hauntings\, and Navajo Skinwalkers. These inexplicable cases were meticulously investigated with a scrutiny that is unheard of these days. During their careers Jonathan and Stanley were exposed to some of the most unbelievable phenomenon known to man. This is a land of rugged beauty\, deep legend\, and mystery where it seems anything can happen on any given day. \nPresenter: Jonathan Redbird Dover\nJonathan Dover is a veteran law enforcement officer. He has worked with the City of Winslow Arizona Police Department\, The National Park Service\, Navajo Historic Preservation Department\, and the Navajo Nation Rangers. He retired from active duty as a Lieutenant in 2011 after 31 years. Jonathan Dover attended the 6-month Navajo Nation Police Academy and graduated with the Marksmanship award\, the Academic Achievement award\, and the Outstanding Cadet award. He further trained at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Criminal Investigations. Jonathan Dover has over 4\,000 hours of law enforcement and weapons training. \nThe Navajo Nation Rangers are tasked with Natural Resource Law Enforcement in the areas of Forestry\, Fish and Wildlife\, Mines\, Minerals\, Parks and Recreation areas\, Archaeology\, Cultural Resources\, Agriculture\, Police work\, and Search and Rescue. \nJonathan Dover was trained as a specialist in Archaeological Resource Crimes Investigations and was one of only two persons doing those investigations in the western United States. He was also trained as a licensed EMT-Basic\, in SWAT tactical operations\, Hazardous materials operational first responder\, Search and Rescue\, Technical accident investigation\, computer forensics\, and was an instructor in Police Firearms training and High Angle Technical Rescue. He was the Co-Commander of the Ranger Tactical team and an adjunct instructor for several classes at Gunsite Academy. \nDuring his work on Navajo Nation lands\, along with his regular duties\, he along with Stanley Milford Jr. were assigned over a period of 11 years to officially investigate and document significant cases involving Bigfoot\, Hauntings\, Navajo Witchcraft\, and UFO’s. \nJonathan Dover on his off-time dances at Native American Pow Wows\, and in the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma Blackfoot Society (Warrior Society). He has played guitar for 45 years\, and is a fly fisherman. \nJonathan Dover is Navajo\, Southern Cheyenne\, Apache Tribe of Oklahoma (Kiowa-Apache) and Filipino. \nPRESENTER: Stanley Milford Jr.\n \nStanley Milford Jr. spent most of his childhood growing up between rural Oklahoma and the Navajo Reservation. He lived and went to school in Oklahoma\, but would spend many summers on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. He graduated High School in Oklahoma and later graduated from Haskell Indian Junior College located in Kansas. Stan also attended Fort Lewis College in Colorado and the University of Arizona in Tucson\, Arizona. It was while he was at Tucson that he was asked to come back to the Navajo Nation and work as a Navajo Ranger. Stan graduated the United States Indian Police Academy (IPA) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Artesia\, New Mexico and then worked continuously as a sworn law enforcement Ranger for over twenty-three (23) years. \nStan served as a Ranger Recruit\, a Ranger and Ranger Sergeant. It was while working as a Sergeant he worked directly with the Chief Ranger in the command section of the department. Stan later served as the Delegated Chief Navajo Ranger for over two (2) years\, through March of 2019. Stan served as a department firearm instructor\, Team Leader for the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team charged to oversee all special operations. He was also commissioned as a Navajo Police Officer to work as a team member with the Navajo Police’s Drug and Gang Task Force. \nOne of Stan’s unique responsibilities was overseeing a section called the “Special Projects Unit (SPU)”. It was within this section that Stan worked with Jonathan Dover (Ret. Lieutenant). This section’s primary role was managing cases and projects that were deemed critical\, sensitive or high profile in nature. These cases could be anything from high priority investigations\, dignitary protection\, high risk detail\, SWAT or other emergency operations. One of the responsibilities of that unit was the investigation of cases that did not fit within everyday parameters of law enforcement or criminal investigation. Enter the “paranormal or supernatural” i.e. cases involving Bigfoot\, UFOs\, Extraterrestrials\, witchcraft\, skinwalkers\, ghosts and hauntings. It should be known that these cases were about 1% of the total of cases that were investigated by the SPU each year. \nIn 2021 Stan decided he needed a change\, he had served over twenty-three years as a Navajo Ranger and he had accomplished what he had originally set out to do in law enforcement. \nStanley and Jonathan have been involved with the History Channel’s Skinwalker Ranch and Beyond Skinwalker. \nGuest Business: MUFON\, Katie Paige \nKatie Paige has personal ties to a High Strangeness Ranch in Colorado. In UFO folklore it was known as the “Clearview” Ranch\, and pre-dates the infamous “Skinwalker Ranch’ by over a decade. This is what motivated her interest in ufology\, to find answers to all her experiences. \nKatie is Colorado MUFON’s State Director. She is a STAR Investigator for MUFON and is the team lead/administrator for MUFON’s MARRS Team. She’s the host of MUFON What’s Up Radio Broadcast on KGRADB.com along with her co hosts Shane Hurd and Tara Diulus. \nMost recently\, Katie can be seen on Travel Channels UFO Witness\, Gaia’s Beyond Belief with George Noory\, History Channel’s Ancient Aliens\, Small Town Monsters; On the Trail of UFO’s Night Visitors\, Ron James’s film Accidental Truth and History Channel’s new series Beyond Skinwalker. \nKatie also conducts independent investigations and research\, she has been a presenter at several conferences and has appeared on many radio shows and podcasts\, including Coast to Coast with George Knapp\, Spaced Out Radio\, UAP Studies Podcast\, and Coast to Coast’s Dark Becomes Light\, and many more. \nKatie is the author of; Letters of Love & Light – Four Decades of UFO Encounters\, Experiences & Sightings Shared with Ufologist R. Leo Sprinkle Ph.D. She is currently writing her second book: High Strangeness on a Colorado Ranch; The Colorado “Skinwalker” Ranch – Craft\, Cattle\, Copters\, Cryptids\, and Cover-Ups.

SUMMARY:The History of the Power Grid and America's Secure Energy Future
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, June 19\, 2023\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$3 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n\nGlenn Rhoades will present an overview of the work he has done since 2011 on existential threats to the US and Colorado power grids. He will also provide a brief overview of how critical both water and power infrastructures are woven together into the very fabric of life throughout history. Glenn will describe a journey that started with his work on sustainable human habitat in 1978\, the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011\, and the study of the US EMP Congressional Commission in 2014.\nAlso included are: Roman Aqueducts\, Nuclear Coolant Water Security\, Viruses And America’s Secure Energy Future. \nThree US Congressional EMP Reports of 2006\, 2008\, and 2017 presented to the nation that both water and power are threatened as never before envisioned by modern human society.\nWhy is there such a surge of interest in this topic?\nWhat is the science behind the threats to the power grid? How safe is our national power grid? How safe is our worldwide power grid? Can a small part of America be bold enough to show the rest of the country that the protection of both water and power systems\, at a minimum\, is a goal? Can we as a community working together\, with a complex mix of players\, guard against newly discovered existential threats that could take these resources away forever?\nIs it possible that damage to only nine of the 55\,000 grids could cause a complete grid down environment for many years? What would that look like? Why would it take many years to get our grids operational again?\n \nMr. Rhoades will address these questions and participate in follow up discussions about the electrical grid challenge. Reference material can be found in the partnership work done with actor\, Dennis Quaid in his movie found at www.griddownpowerup.com and www.blackskyevent.com.\nABOUT OUR SPEAKER\, GLENN E. RHOADES\n \nGlenn E. Rhoades\, Director of National Operations of The Electromagnetic Pulse Task Force on National and Homeland Security\, which is an official US Congressional Advisory Board working at supporting the EMP Congressional Caucus Co-Chaired by Colorado Representative (R) Doug Lamborn and New York Representative (D) Yvette Clarke.\nGlenn was the founder\, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Colorado Nanotech Initiative\, Inc.\nPrior to that\, he spent 35 years at Martin Marietta/Lockheed Martin\, Home Depot\, Best Buy\, Lowes\, and Jefferson County Government and State Initiatives in various positions including: engineering planning\, sales/consulting\, interior space and facility operations\, and administration and subcontract management.\nGlenn has been involved with projects including the Instrumentation and Flight Safety System Program\, the Small Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Program\, the Peacekeeper Missile Program\, the Barstow\, California Heliostat Project and was involved with various interplanetary spacecraft.\nIn 2014 he joined the EMP Task Force under the leadership of The US Congressional EMP Commission Chief of Staff\, Dr. Peter V. Pry and became its National Director of Operations.\nMr. Rhoades has helped author and develop critical infrastructure legislation with state legislators in Utah\, Colorado\, Montana\, and Florida under the topic of establishing Critical Infrastructure Resiliency Initiatives (CIRI) for those states.\nSPECIAL BUSINESS GUEST: Seed Solar is a renewable energy company helping homeowners and businesses produce their own electricity on site. SUMMARY:Douglas County Colorado: Prehistory to 2020
DESCRIPTION:Historic Douglas County\, Inc Presents Its New Book \nDouglas County Colorado: Prehistory to 2020\nMonday\, May 15\, 2023 6:30 pm Doors Open\, 7:00-8:30 pm program\nSouthridge Recreation Center\, Upstairs Auditorium\n4800 McArthur Ranch Rd\n$3 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n\n \nIn the early 1990s\, Douglas County was the fastest growing county in the U.S. By 2020\, it had surpassed 350\,000. For most of its 160-year history\, the county was overwhelmingly agricultural. But over time\, its farms\, cattle ranches\, and dairy farms were replaced by subdivisions\, shopping centers\, and towns of varying size. While parts of the county grew rapidly\, the people in other parts decided to remain small. Historically\, all residents experienced both natural disasters and human-made calamities. They experienced economic depressions and periods of prosperity. For decades\, they have worried about their water supply\, how much growth they wanted\, and how to create a livable future. The most important part of the Douglas County story is its hardworking and forward-looking people who argued about many things while they loved DC as a wonderful place to live. \nHistoric Douglas County\, Inc will introduce its new book Douglas County Colorado: Prehistory to 2020 and highlight several of its surprising contents in a PowerPoint presentation. \n \nPresenters: \n\nTim Weber is on the board of Historic Douglas County\, Inc. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and taught graduate-level history in four different institutions for thirty years in Colorado\, Kentucky\, Illinois\, and Tennessee. He and his wife Linda have lived in Castle Rock since 2005.\nLarry Schlupp is a longstanding member of Historic Douglas County\, Inc.\, Larkspur Historical Society\, and Colorado Preservation\, Inc. Larry had a long career in the telecommunications industry in the U.S. and the U.K. Larry and his wife Julia live in Perry Park and have been residents of Colorado since 1993.\n\n \nThe book will be available for purchase the evening of the May 15 presentation. The book is available on Amazon.com. \n \n

Highlands Ranch has been named a Tree City USA for the 34th consecutive year by The Arbor Day Foundation. \n \nSPECIAL BUSINESS SPONSOR GUEST\, STOP BY THE TABLE AND GET YOUR GARDEN QUESTIONS ANSWERED–\nThe Gardens at Highlands Ranch\n \nhe Gardens is a plant nursery and gift store. We specialize in trees\, shrubs and perennials suited for Douglas County. Our colorful annuals will brighten pots and garden beds from spring until fall. Explore the selection of fountains\, bird baths\, pots and statuary to accent your yard during the fall and winter months\, we focus on houseplants to give your home an inviting feeling. In our gift store\, you will find unique home decor items. At Christmas time we bring in poinsettias\, holiday decorations\, fresh cut and artificial trees to celebrate the season. We are happy to answer your gardening questions all year. Come visit us at 9542 S. SUMMARY:Program: Highlands Ranch and the Colorado Gold Rush Sparked By Local Creek
DESCRIPTION:Program: Highlands Ranch and the Colorado Gold Rush Sparked By Local Creek\nMonday\, October 17\, 2022 – 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm\nDoors open at 6:30 pm for book signing and refreshments.\nSouthridge Recreation Center\, Upstairs Auditorium\n$3 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nThis presentation is about two discoveries: a recent very minor discovery by Rolf Asphaug of an intriguing little label on a local map\, and the earthshaking\, world-changing 164-year-old discovery which that label referenced. It is mainly of the 1859 Colorado Gold Rush started on rivers that go through the Highlands Ranch area and utterly transformed our region\, but also how any one of us today can rekindle our history by keeping our eyes open to little things around us.\nRolf’s HRHS slide show (with captions) arose from on an article he recently wrote for his local homeowners’ association newsletter and later posted on the NextDoor website. This posting gained nearly 1\,000 “likes” and prompted nearly 200 comments\, including wonderful additions. He later developed his article into a presentation to support his becoming a Certified Interpretive Guide under the National Association for Interpretation … and now has revised and expanded it for the Highlands Ranch Historical Society. History told by a series of pictures.\nRolf Asphaug\n\nRolf Asphaug is a retired General Counsel for the Regional Transportation District. He is a volunteer park patroller and naturalist for Jefferson County Open Space\, Chatfield State Park\, Castlewood Canyon State Park\, Staunton State Park\, Golden Gate Canyon State Park and at the Carson Nature Center at South Platte Park. He is a former president of the Colorado Mountain Club and a founding board member of the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative.\nRolf’s wife’s great-great-grandparents came to Colorado in the 1859 Gold Rush\, and her great-great-grandmother’s journal became a book – “Mollie: The Journal of Mollie Dorsey Sanford in Nebraska and Colorado Territories” – that is still in print today. Mollie’s home is still standing in downtown Littleton – a house bought by gold dust.\n Skot Latona \nSkot Latona will be narrating Rolf’s historical slide presentation and adding additional information. He is bringing panning equipment (and may even share some locations to pan with us).\nSkot has served as the Manager of South Platte Park\, South Suburban Parks and Recreation\, in Littleton\, since 2010 after managing the interpretation and education programs for the previous 12 years. He has led nature and cultural heritage tours through Littleton\, around the west\, and internationally for over 30 years and is a trainer for public\, nationally recognized Interpretive Guide certification courses\, Colorado Native Plant Master\, and Audubon Master Naturalist and Master Birder programs. Skot’s mentor in gold panning was the late Ray Simpson\, state representative\, mining expert\, former commissioner of the Colorado Land Board and amateur prospector who developed S Platte Park’s gold panning field trips for 4thtgraders since the mid-1990s.\n \nGOLD PANNING DEMONSTRATION and Hands-on Practice\nGold panning\, also known as placer mining is the technique used capture gold that has been deposited in streams and rivers through erosion\, glacial action and general movement of earth. Also known as free gold because it has broken free of where it was deposited in the earth eons ago in what is generally believed to be the explosions of neutron stars. Members of the Gold Prospectors of the Rockies Gordon Smith and his wife Yvonne\, will be on hand to demonstrate this technique. Gordon is on the board of the club and will also be happy to answer any questions about club activities and membership\n \n \nTHREE authors will have their books for purchase and signing. \nCash and Checks only for PATHWAY TO GOLD and ENGLEWOOD’S AMAZING HISTORY.\nCredit Cards accepted for FINDING GOLD IN COLORADO books.\n \nJuly 20\, 1858: Gold was found in Little Dry Creek that later became the Englewood\, CO area. It changed the course of history in the United States.\n“Englewood’s Amazing Story” by Douglas Cohn is about the many inspiring and inventive people who have made their home in Englewood\, CO. It also includes a fascinating\, easy to read history our area played in the Colorado Gold Rush.\nDouglas Cohn is a Colorado native and longtime Englewood resident who has a big heart for history. He fell in love with Colorado history in the 8th grade when he was a picture of the “face on the barroom floor” in Central City. He is a graduate of Englewood High (1965)\, the University of Colorado (1969) and the Conservative Baptist Seminary (1972). He ran a halfway house in Denver for six years for homeless young people. His family owned the Bonnie Brae Hobby Shop.\nDoug has served on the Englewood Historic Preservation Society Board for 10 years. He loves learning about history and has shared history stories in the Englewood Schools\, senior centers and History Camp Colorado. He is active in the Rocky Mountain Railroad Heritage Society and has been working with the City of Englewood to produce the YouTube video series “Englewood: Moments in History”.\n\nLee and Jane Whiteley have written seven books relating to the history of transportation in the West. Their latest book is “Pathway to Gold\,” a history of the Smoky Hill Trail. This wagon and stagecoach road was blazed specifically for the 1859 “Pike’s Peak” gold rush. The trail ran from several Missouri River towns to Denver.\nLee is the featured presenter for our November 21\, 2022 program\, where he will discuss these transportation pathways and the importance to our area\, along with fascinating information about the many “mile houses” that ran from Denver to Parker. Two of these Mile Houses are still available for visiting and reliving the past! Lee will also have an assortment of his 7 books.\n \nFinding Gold in Colorado\nKevin Singel caught gold fever at the age of six when his father read a National Geographic magazine article about gold prospecting to him. Arriving in Colorado in 1989\, one of his first weekends was spent buying gold pans and learning to pan. He is passionate about the hobby and art that is small scale mining and prospecting. Kevin authors the website www.FindingGoldinColorado.com. “In recent years\, his interest has become a passion with his book as a tangible result.” Kevin also manages the Facebook group ‘Finding Gold in Colorado’.\nMonday\, October 17\, 2022 – 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm\nDoors open at 6:30 pm for book signing and refreshments.\nSouthridge Recreation Center\, Upstairs Auditorium\n$3 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members
