SUMMARY:March Program: The Colorful History of the Fly'n B
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, March 16\, 2026\n\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner table.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\nConsider applying the Donation to Membership! Click HERE for more info.\n \nThe Fly’ n B house and Park has a long and colorful history\, including greenhouses\, gangsters and planes! On the surface it is a plain Jane\, but so much more lies beneath it’s quiet facade. \nHear the fascinating history of this original Landscaping Business owners and builder-Matthew Plews and Family. Over the years the property was sold to local gangster family Smiling Charlie\, and then to the manufacturing family of the Eberhardts. Johnny Bowen and family obtained the land\, and promptly named it The Fly’n B\, as the Bowens had airplanes and runways on the property. Wind Crest purchased the land and deeded the Park and Plews house to HR Metro District. What is in store for this former active and important property? \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: FORREST DYKSTRA \n \nForrest is recently retired as the Manager of Engineering for the Highlands Ranch Metro District in Highlands Ranch\, Colorado. He had been with the Metro District in the Engineering Department\nfor over 35 years. He has been the project manager for many major capital civil projects\, including roadway\, traffic signal\, major storm drainage and channel stabilization projects and\nbuilding and renovation projects. He has been responsible for compliance with the stormwater permit since 2004. And most importantly for this talk\, Forrest knew and interacted many times over the years with the Bowen family\, the last family to own the Fly’n B property. Forrest has lived in Highlands Ranch since 1982 when he married his wife Diane and has seen the community grow from a few thousand people to where it is today. He received a BA degree from Central College\, Iowa with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. He also received a MS degree from Stanford University in Petroleum Engineering. He began working for the Highlands Ranch Metro District in 1986. Today he is enjoying retirement with his family in beautiful Highlands Ranch \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial Program Sponsor and Fly’n B Family Member\nJan Kief of Cruise Planners.\nJan is our Program Sponsor for this presentation.\nJan is also a member of the Fred Eberhardt family\, the last family to own the Fly’n B Park before the Bowens. Jan will speak a bit on what it was like as a child\, living and playing and thoroughly enjoying this special property.\nVisit with Jan before and after the program to learn more about Cruise Planners\, your full service certified land and sea travel advisors!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:February Program: James Madison\, 4th US President and Dolley Madison
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 16\, 2026\n\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner table.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\nConsider applying the Donation to Membership! Click HERE for more info.\n\nPerhaps James Madison was one of this country’s most unappreciated presidents. Small of stature and quiet in manner\, he often went unnoticed among the more celebrated founding fathers in our nation’s history. \nAnd yet\, when we examine carefully the accounts of the first generation\, we find that Madison was almost always there when the most crucial decisions were made. We discover his quiet presence calling for specific actions that would protect our tenuous liberty and safeguard the newly created institutions designed to enhance that liberty. \nWe also admire his perceptive choice of the extraordinary Dolley Madison to be his wife—a fitting companion for this public servant!! As the First Lady\, Dolley brought glamour to The White House. \nThis PowerPoint presentation will examine Madison’s role in the creation of the United States of America and his eventual service as the president who guided the country through the tumultuous years of the War of 1812\, a conflict that proved this new country was strong enough to take its place amongst the nations of the world. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: MARY SUDMAN DONOVAN \n \nMary Sudman Donovan is a local historian and author. Having taught History for many years at Hunter College of the City University of New York\, she now teaches Learners’ Courses at Wind Crest. She is the author of several books including The Thirteen Colonies Cookbook and George Washington at “Head Quarters\, Dobbs Ferry”. \n

The original Mission Viejo land grant in California dates to the Spanish colonial era\, and the nearby mission at San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1776. Modern Mission Viejo\, California\, was developed in the 1960s and was considered ahead of its time. The Aurora project\, initiated in 1972\, replicated many of the California features\, including Spanish-style architecture and the mission bell. The community emphasized community building\, with initiatives like the Nadadores swim team and the Heritage House. The Aurora project also included extensive green spaces and integrated commercial and residential areas. Highlands Ranch residents will find many striking similarities in the Highlands Ranch community. Todd will highlight the company’s and communities’ unique characteristics. Todd will also share some of his work for Douglas County and will bring artifacts from the Highlands Ranch area for attendees to view before and after the presentation. \n\n \nAbout our Presenter: Todd McMahon\n \n \nTodd McMahon is a seasoned archaeologist and museum professional based in Aurora\, Colorado\, with over 30 years of experience in cultural resource management and public history. SUMMARY:September Program: Conducting Business in the Far West: Bent's Fort\, the Santa Fe Trail\, and the Plains Indian Fur Trade
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 15\, 2025\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables (The Fort Restaurant and Charter Financial) before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\nConsider applying the Donation to Membership! \nCheck Membership information HERE.\n \nBent’s Fort was a key commercial\, social\, military\, and cultural hub along the Santa Fe Trail between 1833 and 1849. It was built by William and Charles Bent\, along with Ceran St. Vrain\, as a trading post for commerce with Native American tribes and other traders. Plains Indians were the primary customers of the Bent\, St. Vrain & Company\, and to be successful the company needed to approach the trade according to Indian customs and provide the goods and merchandise desired by the Indians. In the short term\, access to manufactured and imported goods vastly improved the day-to-day lives of the Indians. However\, over the long term the fur trade hastened the loss of their lifestyles and confinement to reservations. \nMr. Schaubs\, the Presenter\, will inform about the history of many real life Forts\, as well as touch on The Fort Restaurant. \n \n \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: MICHAEL SCHAUBS \nMr. Schaubs has had an interest in the culture of the fur trade since he was a child when he would walk corn rows outside of the Wisconsin community he grew up in and where he would find projectile points\, pot shards\, trade beads and gunflints. On entering college\, he was undecided as to whether to pursue a course of study in geology or archeology. It happened that his Geology 101 Prof was captivating\, and his Anthropology 101 Prof was mind-numbing. So quite naturally\, he became a geologist. On such small things the course of a lifetime can be determined. \nAlthough employed as a geologist since 1978\, he has maintained a keen interest in the fur trade throughout his life. After retirement\, he developed a deep interest in fur trade inventories and the material culture of the fur trade and has applied his background as a scientist in evaluating these inventories. He shares his passion and knowledge of the fur trade with the general public as a living history interpreter in the role of a fur trader at special events held at Bent’s Old Fort NHS\, Fort Laramie NHS\, Fort Uncompahgre (Old Spanish Trail Association)\, for the Tesoro Cultural Center\, and at numerous schools and public groups in the area in which he resides. \n \nPROGRAM SPONSOR: CHARTER FINANCIAL –RICK MARTIN\, CPA \nRick will provide information and updates regarding the One Big Beautiful Bill and what it means to you!\n \n..

SUMMARY:May Program--The History of The NFL Since the Broncos Stampeded Onto the Field\, Plus Much More
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 19\, 2025\n\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm Program 7:00-8:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nCruisePlanners will be our guest business sponsor\, providing expert travel information.\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\nConsider applying the Donation to Membership! Click HERE for more info.\n \nHow Do the Denver Broncos Rank in Winning Percentages in the 50+ seasons since the AFL/NFL Era started? \nScott Perry says it’s not a football town; it’s a football Time Zone!! The number of fans the Denver Broncos represents is astronomical for the cow town where this American Football League first appeared. As the AFL was winding down its 10-year history\, many wanted to put this never-a-winner team out to pasture. Tales of that early team made for a dark start but once Denver gained top-level NFL status\, it was onward and upward (with a few setbacks). \nThat 1970 AFL/NFL combined football league boosted the start of the National Football League in its 50th season. Since then\, the NFL has been in a stratosphere all its own in our sports hungry nation. \n\nCome take in the history of the Broncos and if you love another team … well lucky for you\, the presentation takes your team into account as a part of Denver sports history. Hopefully\, the Broncos won the biggest game played between the two\, but even if it is not the case\, Scott opens up a firehose that has been informing fans young and old for over 10 seasons. \nYou will hear how all teams rank in greatness or lousiness in regular seasons. (Of course\, we’ll talk Super Bowl wins\, also.) \nThe stories are fun\, and Scott doles out hope for all fans in his effort to track the Broncos to the same level of eliteness as his Dad’s NY Yankees. (Scott became a Mets fan at age ten living in Levittown NY – a year or so prior to becoming a Bronco fan.) \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: \nScott Perry was Blessed with the ability to learn and remember pro football history as a kid who had to endure 10 schools from K-12th. With zero interest in the sport until being introduced to “Inside the NFL” on HBO\, Scott found a love of the game because of the slow-motion videos capturing players scoring to heart-pounding orchestral music in each game’s highlight reel. \nHe lives in Littleton with his Missouri raised wife and a daughter he hopes catches the same fever for the best spectator sport around. Scott is a former 7NEWS fan Of the Week and cherishes his voicemail informing him the man he considers the biggest part of Bronco success\, Pat Bowlen\, was a huge fan of his effort showing how great the Broncos have been since 1970. \nDo you know there is a Colorado Sports Hall-of- Fame Museum at the Broncos’ Stadium (Empower Field)? Scott will be mentioning it and will have a few pictures and stories to share. \nScott will be signing his book. Cash or check only. \n

SUMMARY:February Program: Thomas Jefferson--Third President of the United States
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Official Presidential portrait of Thomas Jefferson (by Rembrandt Peale\, 1800) \n \nMonday\, February 17\, 2025\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \n \nThe extraordinary life of this very complex man. Surely Thomas Jefferson was the most able and the most complex of America’s first presidents. One might look simply at the volume of paperwork he produced over his 83 years\, his architectural drawings\, the number of original inventions he incorporated into the building of his beloved Monticello\, the careful botanical observations and experiments he conducted and the massive plans he prepared for the University of Virginia to prove that he was an extraordinary scientist and engineer. \n \nMonticello by Thomas Jefferson \nOne must add to the picture his long experience as a politician and public servant: representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses\, delegate to the Continental Congress\, Governor of Virginia\, American Minister to France\, U.S. Secretary of State\, Vice President and then President of the United States. \nIn the complex creation of a new nation\, it was often Jefferson’s ideas and philosophy that helped shape the states. \nThis program will present an overview of the biography of Thomas Jefferson\, looking most closely at his role in shaping the United States and delving into his family life at Monticello that sustained him through his long public service career. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: \nMary Sudman Donovan \nMary Sudman Donovan is a historian and author. She earned a Ph.D. in American history at Columbia University and has taught American and World History. Having taught for many years at Hunter College of the City University of New York\, she now teaches Learners’ Courses at Wind Crest in Highlands Ranch. Mary’s interest in Thomas Jefferson was sparked by the fact that her husband\, Herbert Donovan\, grew up in Charlottesville\, Virginia and attended the University of Virginia. She could see how pervasive Thomas Jefferson’s influence was on the culture and mind set of that small city and how it shaped the education that was offered at “Mr. Jefferson’s University.” \nPROGRAM SPONSOR: Rick Martin\, CPA\, Charter Financial. \nRick Martin\, CPA\, Charter Financial will have a partner table and provide some insight into the upcoming INCOME TAX RETURNS. California wildfire victims qualify for automatic tax extension until October 15th. What does that mean for them? And what can YOU learn from that now. Rick can be reached at http://www.cfrusa.com/\n

SUMMARY:Program: A Fun Evening with Erma Bombeck
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 21\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n\nThree days a week in over 900 papers across the country\, Erma Bombeck’s column At Wit’s End captured the ups and downs of a new American phenomenon\, the suburban housewife.\nFiguring you had to be able to laugh at life to get through it\, Ms. Bomback brought to American awareness the struggles of women whose lives otherwise felt invisible and taken for granted. She let women across America know:\n“You are not alone. We number in the millions. I\, too\, am an American housewife\, and I will laugh by your side.”\n \nWe will find out how Erma got started as a humorist. You will surely chuckle along as she pokes fun at kids\, husbands\, household appliances\, and especially herself.\nThis program includes a monologue in-character\, a Q&A “with Erma” and a Q&A with the scholar/presenter\, Susan Marie Frontczak.\nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: SUSAN MARIE FRONTCZAK\nSusan Marie Frontczak has given over 875 Living History presentations as Marie Curie\, Mary Shelley\, Irene Castle\, Clara Barton\, Eleanor Roosevelt\, and Erma Bombeck across 43 of the United States. She also works with both students and adults to develop their own Living History presentations and is the author of the Young Chautauqua handbooks for Colorado Humanities.\n \nSusan Marie joins millions of Erma Bombeck fans in the U.S. and around the world in celebrating one of the 20th century’s most prolific writers and humorists. As a teen\, she competed with her mother to see which of them could snag the monthly Good Housekeeping magazine in order to be the first to read Erma Bombeck’s column.\nSusan Marie says the hardest part of presenting as Erma Bombeck is choosing what to include from a seemingly endless supply of priceless material. It is a puzzle she is glad to take on as none of her other characters have given her so much to laugh at along the way.

SUMMARY:Program: Rick Crandall and the Colorado Freedom Memorial --25 Years in the Making and More to Come
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 16\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nOn May 30\, 2000\, Rick Crandall broadcast his morning radio show from the American Cemetery above Omaha Beach in Normandy\, France. After the four-hour program the equipment was packed up and the thank-yous were shared and then Rick took one last walk through the cemetery not realizing he would be carrying something home with him and it was something he couldn’t shake. \nFor the last 25 years the Colorado Freedom Memorial and Rick Crandall have been synonymous. What started as an idea after a radio broadcast from France has become one of the most unique military memorials in the country\, and it’s about to get bigger! \n \nThis is the first memorial in America dedicated to ALL wars\, ALL branches of service and containing the names of all those who died from a single state in those wars.\n \nThe Colorado Freedom Memorial is located in Aurora\, Colorado near Buckley Air Force Base. Constructed of glass panels that reflect Colorado’s mountains and blue skies the Memorial holds the names of over 6\,000 Coloradans killed or missing in action. They are grouped by war\, but names will not be alphabetically listed. Much of the Colorado Freedom Memorial is meant to reflect the chaos of war\, including the shuffling of names. \n \nPRESENTER: RICK CRANDALL \n \nFor 30 years Rick was the host of the Breakfast Club on AM 1430\, KEZW and during that time built a close relationship with the veteran community. In 2012 Rick was named the Colorado Broadcaster of the Year for his work on the air and with numerous nonprofit organizations. It is\, though\, the Colorado Freedom Memorial that is closest to his heart. \n PARTNER TABLES AND EVENTS\n \nChristopher M. Falkel American Legion Post 1260 Will be on hand to Present and Retire the Colors. Post Commander Joe Langran will give a brief update on the name change of the Highlands Ranch Post to the Christopher M. Falkel American Legion Post 1260. \nThere will also be a table with information about the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument.

Each landscape hosted incredibly different and now-extinct plants and animals\, leaving behind a rich fossil record\, including those in Highlands Ranch. \nA short video will show how the plates have changed over the last 4 billion years. \nSee how Geoscience helps us as a society. \nA colleague from the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists will have a display table with rocks and fossils and will be available to answer questions. \nABOUT OUR PRESENTER: DR. DONNA ANDERSON \n \nDr. Donna Anderson\, Affiliate Faculty in Geology\, Colorado School of Mines is a semi-retired geologist\, working since 1974 in geotechnical engineering in California and later in the oil and gas industry in the western U.S. and internationally. She received a B.A. in Earth Science and Geography at Cal State Fullerton (1974)\, a M.S. in Geology at UCLA (1980)\, and a Ph.D. in Geology (sedimentology/stratigraphy) at Mines (1997). Her post-Ph.D. career interwove industry and academia as a consultant and geological advisor in the oil and gas industry\, retiring in 2015. \nSince 2000\, she has been on the faculty in the Mines Dept. of Geology and Geological Engineering as a research professor and Affiliate Faculty. It is the location of the biggest remote viewing project ever conducted\, (even by the CIA and DIA). Many strange activities experienced on the ranch will be shared in this PowerPoint presentation.\nNewspaper headlines dubbed the ranch the “Close Encounter Capital of the US”. Rocky Mountain Ranch has been written about in several books. SUMMARY:Program: Becoming an Elvis Tribute Artist plus the Elvis Denver Connection
DESCRIPTION:.. \nMonday\, April 15\, 2024\nDoors Open at 6:30 pm\nEnjoy complimentary refreshments and browse our partner tables before the program.\nProgram 7:00-8:30 pm\nSouthridge Recreation Center\n4800 McArthur Ranch Road\, Highlands Ranch\n$5 Donation Suggested at Door for non-HRHS members\n \nAaron Black will present a Tribute to Elvis in Concert show (yes\, Elvis will be performing!) and then will explain how he became an Elvis Tribute Artist (ETA). Will some lucky ladies in the front row get a scarf or a lei? The program concludes with a history of Elvis in Denver and Aaron will answer questions about ETA’s and Elvis trivia. Are you familiar with the Elvis sandwich? \n \nAaron Black has been performing his Award-Winning Tribute to Elvis for over 25 years. He has won two “Best-in-Show” awards at the Air Force Talent competitions and many other awards! Aaron has performed in two television commercials (one local\, one nation-wide) and in one radio commercial and was a finalist for a recent Apple nationwide commercial. \nThe 5 Elvis Suits that he currently wears are authentic $4000 recreations of Elvis’ most famous suits\, including the Aloha Eagle Jumpsuit worn in the Aloha From Hawaii TV Concert! These suits are created by some of the same people who created Elvis’ original suits and are licensed by Elvis’ estate and were also used in the new “Elvis” movie! He owns three of these Aloha Eagle jumpsuits\, two in white and a stunning black version as well! He also performs in the blue “Owl” suit as seen in the movie “Elvis on Tour” and the black\, gold and red “Matador” suit. No other Elvis Tribute Artist in Colorado has such an impressive collection of authentic suits! \nAaron always mixes a little humor and Elvis trivia into every hip-shaking show. He is often asked if he is lip-synching\, but it really is Aaron singing. He has even performed for two people who knew the real Elvis and both gave him high marks! \n \nAaron has always been an Elvis fan. As a child\, he saw Elvis perform live six times. He met his future wife the day after Elvis died when she asked him about the black armband he was wearing. They became best friends and were married several years later! \nBe sure to visit with our Partner Tables before and after the program! \n \n ..

He graduated High School in Oklahoma and later graduated from Haskell Indian Junior College located in Kansas. Stan also attended Fort Lewis College in Colorado and the University of Arizona in Tucson\, Arizona. It was while he was at Tucson that he was asked to come back to the Navajo Nation and work as a Navajo Ranger. Stan graduated the United States Indian Police Academy (IPA) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Artesia\, New Mexico and then worked continuously as a sworn law enforcement Ranger for over twenty-three (23) years. \nStan served as a Ranger Recruit\, a Ranger and Ranger Sergeant. It was while working as a Sergeant he worked directly with the Chief Ranger in the command section of the department. Stan later served as the Delegated Chief Navajo Ranger for over two (2) years\, through March of 2019. Stan served as a department firearm instructor\, Team Leader for the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team charged to oversee all special operations. He was also commissioned as a Navajo Police Officer to work as a team member with the Navajo Police’s Drug and Gang Task Force. \nOne of Stan’s unique responsibilities was overseeing a section called the “Special Projects Unit (SPU)”. It was within this section that Stan worked with Jonathan Dover (Ret. Lieutenant). This section’s primary role was managing cases and projects that were deemed critical\, sensitive or high profile in nature. These cases could be anything from high priority investigations\, dignitary protection\, high risk detail\, SWAT or other emergency operations. One of the responsibilities of that unit was the investigation of cases that did not fit within everyday parameters of law enforcement or criminal investigation. Enter the “paranormal or supernatural” i.e. cases involving Bigfoot\, UFOs\, Extraterrestrials\, witchcraft\, skinwalkers\, ghosts and hauntings. It should be known that these cases were about 1% of the total of cases that were investigated by the SPU each year. \nIn 2021 Stan decided he needed a change\, he had served over twenty-three years as a Navajo Ranger and he had accomplished what he had originally set out to do in law enforcement. \nStanley and Jonathan have been involved with the History Channel’s Skinwalker Ranch and Beyond Skinwalker. \nGuest Business: MUFON\, Katie Paige \nKatie Paige has personal ties to a High Strangeness Ranch in Colorado. In UFO folklore it was known as the “Clearview” Ranch\, and pre-dates the infamous “Skinwalker Ranch’ by over a decade. This is what motivated her interest in ufology\, to find answers to all her experiences. \nKatie is Colorado MUFON’s State Director. She is a STAR Investigator for MUFON and is the team lead/administrator for MUFON’s MARRS Team. She’s the host of MUFON What’s Up Radio Broadcast on KGRADB.com along with her co hosts Shane Hurd and Tara Diulus. \nMost recently\, Katie can be seen on Travel Channels UFO Witness\, Gaia’s Beyond Belief with George Noory\, History Channel’s Ancient Aliens\, Small Town Monsters; On the Trail of UFO’s Night Visitors\, Ron James’s film Accidental Truth and History Channel’s new series Beyond Skinwalker. \nKatie also conducts independent investigations and research\, she has been a presenter at several conferences and has appeared on many radio shows and podcasts\, including Coast to Coast with George Knapp\, Spaced Out Radio\, UAP Studies Podcast\, and Coast to Coast’s Dark Becomes Light\, and many more. \nKatie is the author of; Letters of Love & Light – Four Decades of UFO Encounters\, Experiences & Sightings Shared with Ufologist R. Leo Sprinkle Ph.D. She is currently writing her second book: High Strangeness on a Colorado Ranch; The Colorado “Skinwalker” Ranch – Craft\, Cattle\, Copters\, Cryptids\, and Cover-Ups.
