Date and Time:
Monday, June 18, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm
Speaker:
Lee Whiteley

The 1920 opening of Rocky Mountain National Park’s Fall River Road linked the east and west side of the park. The road, predecessor to Trail Ridge Road, enabled motorists to enjoy the “Circle Tour,” a 240-mile-long scenic drive linking Denver, Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake, Berthoud Pass, and Idaho Springs.

Postcards, old and present-day photographs, maps, and travel brochures will illustrate the joys and hardships of early automobile tourism in Colorado.

HRHS member Lee Whiteley is a 4th generation Coloradan and now lives in Centennial. Lee and wife Jane are the authors of five books on the transportation history in the West, including The Cherokee Trail, The Yellowstone Highway, and The Lincoln Highway in Colorado. They are associate producers of the PBS documentary “Paving the Way: The National Park-to-Park Highway.” The video was based on their book, The Playground Trail, the National Park-to-Park Highway.
